Ford is expanding its next-generation electric vehicle strategy by partnering with Apple to integrate Apple Maps into its upcoming Universal EV Platform (UEV). The new system is scheduled to debut in 2027 and will support advanced navigation, EV-specific routing, and future BlueCruise hands-free driving features.
Ford Advances Its EV Strategy
Ford is continuing to reshape its electric vehicle strategy following multiple EV launches and a broader reset of its electrification plans.
As part of that effort, the automaker is preparing a new Universal EV Platform (UEV), which is expected to underpin future electric models beginning in 2027.
Apple Maps Coming to Ford’s UEV Platform
Ford announced a partnership with Apple to integrate Apple Maps into the UEV platform using Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive system.
The automaker said it will adapt the platform for deeper in-vehicle integration, while Ford’s Latitude AI team will use Apple’s technology to create a seamless hands-free driving experience.
According to Ford, the system will provide turn-by-turn navigation using natural language, real-time traffic and incident information, intuitive search with detailed place cards, and routing options designed to help drivers choose the best route to their destination.
EV Routing and BlueCruise Integration
The new navigation system will also include intelligent EV routing with battery pre-conditioning.
Ford said Apple has also enabled the company to use its Maps platform to support development of the next generation of BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free highway driving technology.
Universal EV Platform Under Development
Development of the Universal EV Platform is already underway, with the first vehicle currently undergoing testing in both urban and off-road environments.
According to the article, the first model built on the new platform will be Ford’s upcoming $30,000 electric pickup truck, which is expected to take the place of the F-150 Lightning.
Latitude AI Leads Next-Generation Driving Technology
Ford’s Latitude AI division is leading development of the next-generation BlueCruise system.
The wholly owned subsidiary includes more than 600 specialists in machine learning, robotics, and software engineering.
As part of the project, the team is developing the Ford Large Driving Model, a self-driving system trained using data collected from millions of miles of real-world testing.
The partnership with Apple and the continued development of the Universal EV Platform represent key elements of Ford’s plan to launch its next generation of electric vehicles beginning in 2027.
