The Kia K4 is a strong contender in the budget-car segment, offering fresh styling, impressive technology, sedan and hatchback body styles, and an available turbocharged engine. However, the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) results reveal a notable safety difference between the two K4 models.
While the K4 sedan earned the IIHS’ highest Top Safety Pick+ award, the K4 hatchback failed to qualify for either of the agency’s safety awards. The key difference came in the moderate overlap front crash test.
Kia K4 Sedan vs. Hatchback IIHS Safety Scores
The Kia K4 sedan earned a Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the IIHS’ highest safety designation. The hatchback, meanwhile, did not meet the requirements for the lesser Top Safety Pick award.
The two K4 models received identical ratings in five of the six tests that determine eligibility for a safety award. The difference was the moderate overlap front crash test, where the sedan received a Good rating while the hatchback was rated Marginal.

Anything below a Good rating in one of the crash tests disqualifies a vehicle from receiving a safety award. That difference ultimately prevented the K4 hatchback from earning an IIHS award.
Why the K4 Hatchback Missed the Safety Award
The moderate overlap front test is conducted at 40 mph, with 40% of the vehicle’s width striking a deformable barrier. The test was updated in recent years to place greater emphasis on protective measures for passengers seated in the rear.
The K4 sedan posted near-perfect results, with its only minor issue being an Acceptable rating for chest injuries among rear-seat passengers.
The K4 hatchback showed the same slightly increased risk of chest injuries. However, its rear passenger restraints and dummy kinematics also received Marginal ratings, which pulled down the overall result.
In practical terms, the sedan’s rear seatbelts and the dummy’s body movements during the crash were better controlled than those in the hatchback.
The result does not mean the K4 hatchback is unsafe. However, it identifies a vulnerability that was not present in the sedan, which may be relevant to buyers who regularly transport passengers in the second row.
Hatchbacks With IIHS Safety Awards
For buyers looking for a new hatchback under $30,000 who want an IIHS safety award, several other options earned recognition for 2026.
Mazda 3 Hatchback
The Mazda 3 Hatchback earned a Top Safety Pick+ award for 2026 despite being several years old. Its crash-safety scores were flawless, while its vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test received an Acceptable rating.
The result adds to the Mazda’s other qualities, including fun handling, more standard horsepower than competitors, and one of the segment’s more premium interiors.
Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius received top marks in every safety test except for its headlights, which earned an Acceptable rating. IIHS researchers found little to fault in its crash safety and crash prevention performance, allowing the Prius to earn a Top Safety Pick+ award.
The Prius also offers a stylish alternative in the segment along with exceptional efficiency from its standard hybrid powertrain.
Honda Civic Hatchback
The Honda Civic is the only other hatchback to earn an IIHS safety award for 2026. It received the lesser Top Safety Pick award.
The Civic received an Acceptable rating in the moderate front overlap test and Acceptable ratings in both crash-prevention tests. While those results leave room for improvement, they were still stronger overall than the K4 hatchback’s results.
The Honda is also one of the most spacious hatchbacks, while offering good driving characteristics and an available hybrid powertrain.
What the K4 Safety Results Show
Safety tests cannot reproduce every real-world crash scenario, but they provide insight into how a vehicle may perform. The Kia K4 hatchback remains an option in the compact segment, but its rear-seat performance in the moderate overlap front test prevented it from matching the safety award earned by the K4 sedan.
