The Nissan GT-R SUV rumor is back after a new report from Japan claimed Nissan is “positively considering” a high-performance SUV that could use technology from the R35 GT-R.
According to the latest issue of Best Car magazine, the rumored super SUV could potentially feature a twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain similar to what has been rumored for the next-generation GT-R. However, there is currently no official confirmation from Nissan that such a vehicle is in development.
Why the Nissan GT-R SUV Rumor Remains Uncertain
The latest report does not introduce new evidence confirming that Nissan is developing a GT-R-inspired SUV. Much of the discussion remains speculation and educated guesswork, including suggestions about a V6 hybrid powertrain and comparisons with other super SUVs.
Best Car has also published GT-R-related reports in the past that did not ultimately become production models. As Creative Trend pointed out, one example involved claims about a Final Edition R35 GT-R equipped with a mild-hybrid system. The model was widely discussed but never reached production before the R35’s lifecycle ended.
Nissan’s current business situation also presents another challenge. The company is undergoing a major overhaul, while developing a performance SUV capable of competing with expensive European models would require substantial investment, engineering resources and a clear strategy.
Nissan’s Focus Appears to Be on the Next GT-R
If Nissan is developing another major performance vehicle, the company’s stated focus points toward the next GT-R rather than an SUV. CEO Ivan Espinosa has said the GT-R will return, while acknowledging that developing the next-generation R36 presents a serious technical challenge.
According to the report, Nissan is working on a hybrid successor using a brand-new platform rather than simply updating the existing R35 architecture.
Espinosa has also suggested that Nissan could revive other enthusiast-focused models, including the Silvia. That indicates Nissan continues to place value on dedicated sports cars while expanding its lineup of electric vehicles.
GT-R SUV Could Still Happen
A GT-R-inspired SUV remains possible, particularly as performance brands increasingly offer SUVs that combine high performance with practicality. However, the latest report from Japan does not provide official evidence that Nissan is actually developing one.
For now, the Nissan GT-R SUV remains a long-running possibility fueled by speculation, while Nissan’s confirmed focus remains on bringing back the GT-R and developing its next-generation successor.
