With the Chevrolet Camaro discontinued and the Dodge Challenger transitioning to electrification, the Ford Mustang recently outsold every rival in the sports car category.
The Mustang currently stands as the last relatively affordable, rear-wheel-drive performance coupe offering a traditional internal-combustion experience directly from the factory.
That position, however, faces challenges as global emissions standards become stricter. The 5.0-liter Coyote engine is facing significant regulatory hurdles in markets such as Europe and Australia.
Ford CEO Avoids Confirming the V8’s Future
The uncertainty surrounding the V8 became more apparent during a recent interview between Australian publication Drive and Ford CEO Jim Farley.
Drive asked Farley whether Ford would keep the Mustang equipped with a V8 in its current form alive for as long as possible. Rather than guaranteeing the eight-cylinder engine’s survival, Farley responded, “Out of our cold, dead hands will we not have… a manual Mustang,” sidestepping the question about the V8.
While the comment did not directly confirm the V8’s future, it highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the Mustang’s powertrain strategy. Ford continues investing in models such as the Dark Horse, while engineers are reportedly developing hybrid alternatives to meet future standards.
Industry analysts also anticipate that an electric Mustang sedan could eventually join the broader lineup to offset fleet emissions.

Keeping the manual gearbox would preserve a key part of the Mustang’s traditional driving experience, but an EcoBoost four-cylinder paired with a manual transmission would represent a different formula.
The Mustang’s identity has been closely associated with the sound and linear power delivery of its naturally aspirated V8. Removing that engine would change a central element of the muscle car’s traditional character.
