The Batman Returns Batmobile used in Tim Burton’s 1992 film is heading to auction, and its estimated value could push it past the previous auction record for a Batmobile.
A Batmobile Built for Batman Returns
The movie car stands apart from the traditional muscle-car-inspired Batmobiles seen elsewhere on screen. It features a dragster-like shape, a long hood, flowing wheel fenders, oversized rear fins, a turbine-inspired nose and jet-like rear exhaust.
Underneath the dramatic design is a custom frame built from two spliced Chevrolet Impala chassis. The Batmobile is powered by a Chevy V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission.
Unlike a replica, this is the screen-used hero car from Batman Returns. It appeared in most of the film’s driving sequences and remains a functioning vehicle.
Batmobile Could Surpass $4.62 Million Record
The Batmobile is estimated to sell for between $5 million and $7 million. If it reaches the top end of that range, it would surpass the current Batmobile auction record.
That record belongs to the original Batmobile from the 1966 TV series, which sold for $4.62 million in 2013.
The estimated price could also exceed the $6.38 million paid in 2019 for a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 known as the “Bond Car.”
Depending on how broadly a movie car is defined, a 1970 Porsche 917K used extensively in Steve McQueen’s Le Mans could also be considered the record holder. That Porsche sold for $14.08 million in 2017, although it was a genuine, fully functioning prototype race car with considerable motorsport history.
Batman Returns Batmobile Heads to Auction
Julien’s will hold a live and online auction on November 23, 2026. The event will feature the Batmobile along with other Batman collectibles, including costumes, props and production artifacts.
Given its status as the screen-used hero car and its estimated value, the functioning Batmobile will likely become a display piece for its future owner.
Another Burton-Style Batmobile Sold Last Year
The 1992 film car will follow another Burton-style Batmobile that was sold last year. That vehicle was built around 1992 for the Batman Stunt Show at the Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park.
Bonhams sold that car alongside other movie vehicles, including a replica of the 2001 Nissan Skyline R34 from The Fast and the Furious franchise.
