The 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport is getting a playful introduction in Honda’s latest commercial, which imagines the SUV as part of a Mars-style mission while highlighting its increased off-road capability.
Honda Passport TrailSport Heads for Mars — Sort Of
Honda makes it clear from the beginning that the Passport TrailSport is not actually being presented as an interplanetary rover. Instead, the commercial follows a father and his child playing space command while the dad collects firewood at a countryside campsite.
The two communicate by radio, describing celestial hazards that correspond with trail obstacles, including shallow water crossings and steep descents. The result is a playful way of demonstrating some of the Passport TrailSport’s capabilities.
The commercial also features the Passport TrailSport alongside another Honda vehicle, the CR-V TrailSport. But the more unusual cameo comes from a futuristic-looking trailer that appears in the scene.
Honda Base Station Trailer Makes a Cameo
The trailer is not a computer-generated concept. It is the Honda Base Station trailer prototype that the company showed back in January.
Honda designed the trailer to sleep four people and equipped it with a pop-up roof, air conditioning, and an external shower and cooking area. It was also designed to remain light enough for something like a CR-V to tow.
Whether Honda will actually build the trailer remains an open question.
What’s New With the 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport?
The updated 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport looks largely familiar, with the most noticeable exterior change being additional LED lights in the faux hood scoop. Underneath, however, Honda has made major revisions to the SUV’s hardware.
The suspension is completely new, along with the front subframe and axle shafts. Those changes give the Passport TrailSport more than an extra inch of ground clearance, bringing the total to 9.65 inches.
The updated SUV also gains improved approach, breakover and departure angles. Together, those changes are intended to allow the new Passport TrailSport to travel farther off-road than any previous version.
The commercial may take the Passport TrailSport all the way to Mars, but even with its added off-road capability, that remains beyond what the SUV is being presented to do.
