The Tesla Model 3 is set for one of its biggest updates since the 2023 “Project Highland” refresh, bringing a larger touchscreen, new interior options and vehicle-to-load capability. However, U.S. customers will not be the first to receive the latest Tesla Model 3 hardware upgrades.
Tesla Model 3 Updates Begin With Shanghai-Built Cars
According to a Tesla Korea post on X, Tesla Model 3 sedans produced from October 2026 will receive a range of upgrades. The vehicles are built at Tesla’s Giga Shanghai plant, meaning markets such as Europe will also receive the updated equipment.
The announced changes include a 16-inch center touchscreen with enhanced pixel density, a black headliner, V2L functionality, a new Zen Grey upholstery color and 19-inch Dark Nova wheels.
Larger Touchscreen and New Design Features
Current Tesla Model 3 sedans sold in the U.S. feature a slightly smaller 15.4-inch touchscreen. American models are also available with 19-inch Nova wheels, although the current wheels have a lighter finish.
The existing Model 3 touchscreen is already designed for functions such as video viewing and gaming, while the new 16-inch display is expected to provide an upgraded experience with its enhanced pixel density.
V2L Brings 2.2-kW Power Capability
The V2L system is one of the most notable additions to the updated Tesla Model 3. It provides 2.2-kW of AC power, allowing the vehicle to run a kettle or a similar cooking device.
The capability could make the Model 3 useful for activities such as camping. Tesla’s Model Y L is already offered in the U.S. with an outlet adapter capable of powering devices such as lights and laptops.
U.S. Tesla Model 3 Buyers May Have to Wait
Tesla typically introduces cosmetic and technology improvements for Shanghai-built models first. Software-based changes can reach U.S.-built Teslas relatively quickly, but the latest Model 3 upgrades involve hardware.
Tesla Model 3 vehicles sold in the U.S. are currently produced at the company’s Fremont Factory in Fremont, California. The V2L and touchscreen improvements are not expected to remain exclusive to Shanghai-built cars, but U.S. customers could have to wait several months for the new equipment.
Tesla Model 3 Continues to Get Updates
The Model 3 remains the second-best-selling EV in the U.S., behind only the Model Y crossover. Its performance, efficiency and reasonable starting price have helped maintain demand, while regular software updates and the 2023 “Project Highland” refresh have kept the model updated.
Next year will mark a full decade since the Model 3 first went into production. The latest hardware enhancements now add another significant update to the vehicle as new rivals, including the BMW i3, begin to make their presence felt on the sales charts.
