The Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9 have delivered solid sales performances for much of the year, but September brought a sharp decline for both three-row electric SUVs, with Hyundai taking the bigger hit.
Hyundai Ioniq 9 Sales Drop 65%
Hyundai sold just 372 Ioniq 9s in September, marking a 65% decline from the same month last year, when the automaker sold slightly more than 1,000 units.
The September result also continued a downward trend for the Ioniq 9. Monthly sales have declined each month since June, adding to the recent weakness in the model’s performance.
Kia’s EV9 performed better in September, although its sales were also significantly lower than a year earlier. Kia sold 1,955 EV9s during the month, down from 3,094 in September of last year.
Despite the year-over-year decline, September was actually the EV9’s strongest month for sales volume compared with the previous few months. Aside from January and February, Kia has managed to sell at least 1,200 EV9s in each month.
Ioniq 9 Sales Remain Up for the Year
The broader year-to-date numbers tell a different story for the Hyundai Ioniq 9. Hyundai has sold 6,521 examples so far this year, up 56% from the 4,177 sold during the same period last year.
The Ioniq 9 is also Hyundai’s only electric vehicle with higher year-over-year sales this year. Ioniq 5 sales are down 24%, although the model continues to outsell the Ioniq 9 with more than 30,000 sales.
The Ioniq 6 is also significantly lower, but it has been discontinued, making a direct comparison with the other models less applicable.
Kia EV9 Sales Are Nearly Even
The Kia EV9, which has been on sale a little longer, has not posted a major year-over-year increase. However, it also has not declined significantly, with 12,429 sales so far this year compared with 12,448 during the same period last year.
The EV9 is also outselling Kia’s smaller, cheaper EV6, which has fallen into four-digit sales this year.
The only Kia electric vehicle performing better year over year is the EV3. However, the EV3 only recently reached dealers, meaning Kia had no sales of the model last year for comparison.
While September brought steep year-over-year declines for both three-row electric SUVs, their full-year results remain notably different, with the Hyundai Ioniq 9 still well ahead of its 2025 sales total and the Kia EV9 essentially even with last year’s figure.
