Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid sales have fallen sharply this year even as overall Corolla Cross sales continue to rise, creating a striking split between the automaker’s smaller SUV and its larger hybrid models. Through September, Corolla Cross sales increased 22.9% to 90,131, while hybrid sales dropped 43.5% to 13,905.

Corolla Cross Hybrid Sales Continue to Fall

The decline has significantly changed the mix of Corolla Cross models Toyota sells. A year ago, one in three Corolla Cross SUVs sold was a hybrid. Now, the figure is about one in seven.

September did little to change that trend. Toyota sold 9,776 Corolla Cross models during the month, including 1,821 hybrids. That compares with 2,214 Corolla Cross Hybrids sold in September a year earlier.

The shift stands out because Toyota’s larger hybrid SUVs are moving in the opposite direction. Through September, Grand Highlander Hybrid sales were up 34.3%, Highlander Hybrid sales increased 34.8%, and 4Runner Hybrid sales nearly doubled.

Hybrid Sales Rise in Toyota’s Larger SUVs

Toyota’s January-through-September sales figures show a clear difference between the Corolla Cross and the three larger SUVs. Toyota does not report gas sales separately, so the gas figures below are the model totals minus hybrid sales, based on Toyota’s third-quarter sales report.

Model Gas Sales 2025 → 2026 Hybrid Sales 2025 → 2026
Corolla Cross 48,747 → 76,226 24,594 → 13,905
4Runner 53,401 → 81,835 13,600 → 26,152
Highlander 22,835 → 16,211 19,842 → 26,739
Grand Highlander 51,270 → 43,310 48,563 → 65,201

The Corolla Cross is the only SUV in the group where hybrid sales declined. In the three larger models, hybrid sales grew faster than gas sales.

Six in 10 Grand Highlanders are now sold as hybrids, compared with fewer than half a year ago. The RAV4 is not included because Toyota now sells it only as a hybrid or plug-in.

Corolla Cross Hybrid Sales Decline Despite Higher Overall Sales

The Corolla Cross decline in hybrid sales is not simply a result of weaker overall demand for the model. Toyota described 2025 as a record year for the Corolla Cross, and total sales have continued to increase. The change has instead come from the hybrid share of those sales.

Toyota has not commented on the sales split. The closest its release comes is a statement from Andrew Gilleland, senior vice president of Toyota Motor North America’s Automotive Operations Group.

“From affordability to electrification, our multi-path strategy continues to meet customers where they are and give them options that fit their lifestyles.”

Corolla Cross Hybrid Costs Thousands More

Toyota’s configurator lists the following 2026 Corolla Cross prices before the $1,595 destination charge:

Trim Gas Price Hybrid Price Gap
L / S $25,335 $29,795 $4,460
LE / SE $27,665 $31,115 $3,450
XLE / XSE $30,260 $33,830 $3,570

Every Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with all-wheel drive. Gas versions start with front-wheel drive, meaning part of the price difference between the two powertrains accounts for AWD whether the buyer wants it or not.

How Long Does the Corolla Cross Hybrid Take to Pay Off?

The EPA estimates that the Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD saves about $650 a year in fuel compared with the gas AWD model. The hybrid is rated at 42 mpg combined, compared with 30 mpg combined for the gas AWD version.

With the hybrid carrying a price premium of $3,450 to $4,460, the fuel savings would take roughly five to seven years to recover the additional upfront cost.

For buyers who want AWD anyway, the five-year timeframe can be shorter relative to the cost of adding AWD to the gas model. For buyers who do not need AWD, the payback period is longer because a front-wheel-drive gas Corolla Cross uses less fuel than the AWD version used for the EPA comparison.

Corolla Cross Gas vs. Hybrid

The sales data show that most Corolla Cross buyers are now choosing the gas model. Toyota has not said why Corolla Cross Hybrid demand has fallen, and the sales figures alone do not explain the reason.

What the numbers do show is a sharp shift in the model mix: while Corolla Cross total sales are rising, hybrid sales have dropped substantially, leaving the gas version as the choice for most buyers at this end of Toyota’s SUV lineup.
