2026 Lexus RZ: More Power, Steer-by-Wire, and a Manual Mode?

Lexus Revamps the RZ for 2026 with More Power and Advanced Tech

Since its debut in 2023, the Lexus RZ has remained a relatively understated electric SUV. However, Lexus is making a bold move to inject excitement into the model with a comprehensive update. The refreshed RZ brings more power, cutting-edge technology, and intriguing new driving dynamics. While these changes have been unveiled for the European market, they offer a glimpse into what we might expect for the U.S. version in the coming years.

Introducing the RZ550e: More Power and F Sport Styling

One of the most significant updates is the introduction of the Lexus RZ550e, which also carries the F Sport badge—making it the first RZ model to do so. This performance-oriented variant features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 402 horsepower—a substantial increase from the 308-hp RZ450e and a significant leap over the 201-hp single-motor RZ300e.

Lexus has also given a power boost to other models in the lineup:

Model Power Output
RZ550e (F Sport) 402 hp
RZ500e (AWD) 376 hp
RZ450e (Previous AWD Model) 308 hp
RZ300e (Single Motor) 221 hp (up from 201 hp)

Steer-by-Wire Returns—With Refinements

Another major update is the introduction of steer-by-wire technology. While Lexus originally showcased this feature at the RZ launch two years ago, it was never made available due to concerns over its overly responsive nature. Engineers have since reworked the system, increasing the range of motion to 200 degrees to provide a more natural feel. Notably, the steer-by-wire system is paired with a yoke-style steering wheel rather than a traditional round wheel, a decision that remains a talking point among enthusiasts.

“Interactive Manual Drive”: An EV with a Simulated Manual Mode

Lexus is also adding a new feature called “Interactive Manual Drive”, which aims to simulate an eight-speed manual transmission. Unlike traditional simulated gears found in some performance EVs, this system is said to provide both sound and visual feedback—but with a twist. Rather than mimicking a gasoline engine, Lexus has opted to amplify the natural sounds of the electric powertrain to create a unique auditory experience.

Bigger Battery, More Range, and Faster Charging

Lexus has slightly increased the battery pack capacity from 64.3 kWh to 69.3 kWh, leading to improved range. The automaker estimates that the updated RZ will gain up to 100 km (62 miles) of additional range on the WLTP cycle, which translates to roughly 53 miles based on EPA calculations.

For reference, the current EPA range ratings for the Lexus RZ are:

  • RZ300e: 266 miles
  • RZ450e: 196 miles

Additionally, the onboard AC charger has been upgraded from 6.6 kW to 22 kW, significantly improving Level 2 charging times.

Will These Changes Come to the U.S. Market?

Lexus has not yet confirmed when—or if—these updates will make their way to the U.S. market. However, given the timing of this refresh, it is reasonable to expect these changes to be implemented for the 2026 Lexus RZ.

With a substantial boost in power, refined steer-by-wire technology, a simulated manual mode, and a larger battery, the RZ is poised to become a more compelling option in the luxury EV segment. Stay tuned for official U.S. announcements in the coming months.
