Lamborghini’s First EV: What We Know So Far
Lamborghini is staying on track with its plans to launch its first-ever electric vehicle (EV) by 2030, and it promises to be nothing short of groundbreaking. According to Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume, the high-performance EV could boast up to 2,000 horsepower when it finally arrives. The car will be built on a dedicated platform developed by Porsche, which will also underpin models from Audi and Bentley.
A Unique Platform for Lamborghini’s EV
Blume emphasized that the platform is being designed specifically for Lamborghini’s needs, allowing for up to 980 volts of power. This architecture will enable faster charging and improved efficiency, making Lamborghini’s EV a serious contender in the high-performance segment.
“It’s a very specific setup for Lamborghini,” Blume stated in a recent interview, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to maintaining its identity even in the EV era.
Inspired by the Lanzador Concept
The upcoming EV will take design cues from the Lamborghini Lanzador concept, first revealed in mid-2023. The concept car featured a raised suspension and a two-door layout, both of which will carry over to the production model. The Lanzador debuted with an impressive 1,341 horsepower, equivalent to one megawatt of power. However, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed that the production model will exceed this figure, making it the most powerful Lamborghini ever built.
All-Wheel Drive and Extreme Performance
The electric Lamborghini will feature dual electric motors, delivering all-wheel drive capabilities for maximum traction and performance. Built at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, the production Lanzador will join the brand’s lineup alongside its hybrid supercars and SUVs.
Delayed Launch, But Big Sales Expectations
Lamborghini initially planned to debut the EV in 2028, but the project was pushed back by a year. Despite the delay, Winkelmann remains optimistic about the car’s commercial success, stating that he expects it to sell as well as the new entry-level Lamborghini, the Temerario.
That’s an ambitious goal, especially considering the skepticism from industry leaders like Rimac CEO Mate Rimac, who has expressed doubts about high-end buyers embracing electric supercars. However, Lamborghini remains confident that it can deliver an EV that stays true to its brand’s DNA.
“I promise that it will be a typical Lamborghini, something very emotional,” Blume added, hinting at a driving experience that will match the excitement of the brand’s legendary V12 models.
