Rivian is bringing Ghostbusters to its vehicles for Halloween 2026 with a new over-the-air update for the R1T, R1S and R2. The new Halloween Mode is designed to turn every Rivian into what the automaker calls a “ghost-hunting machine,” complete with themed sounds, lighting effects, hidden characters and interactive surprises.
Rivian Halloween Mode 2026 Adds Ghostbusters Features
The Ghostbusters-themed update begins rolling out tomorrow, Friday, October 10. Rivian says activating Halloween Mode will reveal “sounds light and clues that unlock hidden characters and even a few unexpected surprises.”
The 2026 Halloween Mode is available through a dedicated Ghostbusters in-vehicle app. Because of the immersive features, the app can only be opened while the vehicle is parked.
Once activated, the driver display switches to a Ghostbusters-themed, old-school linear or ribbon-style speedometer. That display remains active while driving, while the other Halloween effects operate when the vehicle is in Park.
A red toggle “switch” on the center touchscreen synchronizes the interior lighting, themed audio and exterior displays.
Six Ghostbusters Themes and Custom Effects
Trick or Treat Mode changes the driver and rear displays while synchronizing the exterior lighting and audio systems with the interior routine.
Drivers can choose from six themes: Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman and Random. Each theme features its own exterior LED sequences and soundscapes, and the effects can also be controlled remotely through the Rivian app.
Rivian also includes a Motion Mode that allows the vehicle to “react” when someone walks past it.
Custom lock sounds are available as well. Gen 1 R1 vehicles get access to Ecto-1, while Gen 2 and R2 vehicles receive Ecto-1, Proton Pack and Chant.
Hidden Characters and a New Mallow Mash Game
Rivian software engineers have added a scavenger hunt featuring interactive clue cards that direct users toward hidden characters within areas such as drive modes, Gear Guard settings, side cameras and the Energy app.
Finding a Ghost Guard or Slimer character triggers a special animation and sound from the vehicle.
The Voice Assistant also receives an “eerie” tone and can be used to read clues or activate exterior light shows and sounds.
While parked, drivers can also play Mallow Mash from the center display. The game challenges players to pop as many Mini-Pufts marshmallow men as possible within a specified time.
These features arrive through software version 2026.36.0 on the R1 and version 2026.36.40 on the R2.
Rivian Takes Ghostbusters Events Across America
Rivian’s Halloween celebration extends beyond the software update. The company is launching a season-long celebration of the Sony Pictures film that includes a new advertising campaign, retail space and community events, along with exhibits across the country featuring versions of the Ecto-R1.
Rivian stores in Laguna Beach, Austin, Venice, Miami Brickell, San Francisco and New York City’s Meatpacking District will host Halloween celebrations featuring Ecto-R1 builds.
The stores will also feature Ghostbusters-themed chargers, limited-edition merchandise and themed refreshments.
Rivian will additionally participate in the NYC Village Halloween Parade and a Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt pop-up in Los Angeles, with more events yet to be announced.
Bill Murray Voice Returns for the Celebration
The Ghostbusters-themed experience also includes the voice of Bill Murray, who played Dr. Peter Venkman in the original 1984 film.
With the R1T, R1S and R2 receiving the Halloween Mode update and Ghostbusters-themed events planned across the country, Rivian’s 2026 celebration combines vehicle software, interactive games, lighting and sound effects with physical exhibits and community events.
