Mazda’s Zinc Green paint color nearly missed out on becoming an option for the MX-5, despite its distinctive look on the roadster. Originally developed with SUVs in mind, the shade went through several design adjustments before Mazda settled on a version that suited the MX-5 and remained consistent under different lighting conditions.

The story behind Zinc Green offers a look at how Mazda approaches automotive color design, from an initial request by its North American team to unexpected challenges involving wheel finishes and production-line sensors.

How Mazda Developed Zinc Green

According to Kito Seno, Mazda’s chief designer of CMF in the company’s design department, Mazda North America requested a strong green shade for its vehicles. CMF refers to the colors, materials and fabrics selected for the brand’s cars.

In an interview with the Japanese publication Response, Seno explained that Mazda America wanted an outdoor-inspired color for the CX-50.

“We didn’t want a typical outdoor color that you see everywhere. Mazda has a lot of sporty cars, so we thought about a concept that would suit them, and that’s how we arrived at airplane paint,” Seno said in a translated statement.

The original brief called for a tougher, yellowish shade that would suit the CX-50 while conveying a sense of quality. That direction eventually led to Zinc Green, a color that Mazda would later consider for the MX-5 as well.

Why Zinc Green Almost Missed the Mazda MX-5

Mazda initially intended to develop a different new color for the MX-5. Zinc Green appeared to work well on the brand’s SUVs, but the first attempts to apply it to the roadster produced a different impression.

The shade was considered “too soft” for the MX-5, and getting the green to look right on the car proved difficult. Depending on the weather and lighting, the paint could appear more blue on a cool day and considerably lighter during summer.

To address the inconsistency, Seno introduced a hint of blue to give the color a cooler appearance and help it remain more consistent under changing lighting conditions.

The adjustment helped Mazda refine Zinc Green for the MX-5, allowing the roadster to receive a shade that had originally been intended for SUVs.

Black Wheels Helped Complete the Zinc Green Look

The wheel finish also became part of the color-development process. Mazda had initially planned to pair Zinc Green with gunmetal wheels, but the combination drew an objection from someone involved in the process.

One comment was that the combination “looks like a matcha latte,” prompting a change to black wheels instead.

That decision introduced another unexpected challenge. The black wheels could not initially be detected by sensors on the assembly line, creating a production issue that Mazda eventually resolved.

The episode highlights how even seemingly small styling decisions can involve additional adjustments before a new color combination is ready for production.

Mazda Zinc Green Expands the Brand’s Color Choices

Zinc Green arrives as automakers begin offering more color variety beyond the predominantly grayscale choices often seen across vehicle lineups. Green is also gradually returning to some automotive color palettes, providing another option for buyers looking beyond conventional shades.

For Mazda, Zinc Green’s development involved more than choosing a paint formula. The company had to adapt the shade to the MX-5’s design, account for changes in lighting, and settle on a wheel finish that worked visually and could be handled by the production process.

Although the color was initially intended for SUVs, Zinc Green ultimately made its way into most of Mazda’s lineup, including the MX-5. Its development illustrates the design decisions and manufacturing challenges that can shape a seemingly simple choice of automotive paint.
