The Suzuki Jimny is getting a retro makeover inspired by American SUVs of the early 1990s. Developed by Japanese customization specialist C.L.Link in collaboration with fashion designer Ryo Ishikawa, the “90s American SUV Specification” concept combines square headlights, a lowered suspension and period-inspired styling to transform the compact SUV into something that could resemble a 1990s GMC with the right badges.

The project, currently shown in development images, is called “square eyes x low down.” It will be exhibited at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2027, scheduled for January 15-17, and C.L.Link says it has already started accepting orders ahead of the event.

Suzuki Jimny Gets Square Headlights and Retro Styling

C.L.Link specializes in custom parts for the Suzuki Jimny, with its main store in Hiroshima offering vehicle sales, maintenance and customization based on customer requests. Its latest project takes the Jimny’s angular design in a distinctly nostalgic direction, drawing inspiration from American SUVs of the early 1990s.

The custom build was developed with Japanese fashion designer Ryo Ishikawa. Its exterior changes include a square-headlight conversion kit, a dedicated grille and a specially designed front bumper.

The suspension has also been modified with a 1.0-inch lowering kit based on Eibach springs and Bilstein shock absorbers. The result is a lower stance that complements the concept’s retro styling.

At the rear, the spare tire is optional. Without it, the Jimny features a color-matched rear smoothing panel, giving the vehicle a cleaner appearance.

16-Inch Wheels and Recaro Seats Complete the Build

The exterior details extend beyond the headlights and bodywork. The concept features red reflector lenses, smoked taillights and C.L.Link UnionRim TX wheels measuring 16 inches, designed with a distinctive 1990s-inspired look.

The vehicle also carries what C.L.Link describes as a dedicated emblem. Its overall styling evokes American SUVs from the era, although the concept does not need actual GMC badges to establish its design inspiration.

Inside, the front seats have been replaced with Recaro units. The rear seats receive a dedicated cover designed to match the interior’s color scheme and styling.

These changes give the custom Jimny a more coordinated appearance, carrying the retro theme from the exterior into the cabin.

Will the 90s American SUV Jimny Come to the U.S.?

The “90s American SUV Specification” concept is scheduled to appear at Tokyo Auto Salon 2027 from January 15 through 17. Although the Suzuki Jimny is available in markets around the world, the custom model is expected to be sold primarily in Japan.

C.L.Link has confirmed that it has begun receiving orders in time for the Tokyo Auto Salon event. However, the available information does not confirm plans to offer this specific customization package in the United States.

The concept therefore remains focused on the Japanese market for now, despite its styling inspiration from American SUVs.

C.L.Link Also Offers the More Rugged CL-20 Jimny

The “square eyes x low down” is not C.L.Link’s only nostalgia-focused Jimny project. The company also offers the CL-20, a custom model designed to give the compact SUV a more rugged appearance.

Unlike the lowered setup of the new concept, the CL-20 features lifted suspension. Its design incorporates elements associated with well-known production vehicles, including previous generations of the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Bronco.

With the “90s American SUV Specification” concept, C.L.Link is taking a different approach to Jimny customization, combining a lowered stance, square headlights and retro details inspired by American SUVs of the early 1990s. The vehicle is set to make its public appearance at Tokyo Auto Salon 2027, while the company has already begun taking orders.
