Lincoln is planning to shrink its U.S. dealership network to fewer than 300 stores by the end of 2027, continuing a consolidation strategy that has improved dealer profitability despite declining sales. The Ford luxury division currently operates 387 standalone dealerships, down from as many as 797 in 2019, as the brand focuses on a smaller, healthier retail network.

Lincoln Plans Further Dealership Cuts

Lincoln has been reducing its dealership count in recent years as part of a broader effort to consolidate its retail operations. Despite having only three models in showrooms at the moment, the luxury brand has maintained steady movement and sales, while its financial position remains healthy.

According to Automotive News, Lincoln executives want to reduce the network to fewer than 300 standalone stores by the end of 2027. The company previously operated as many as 797 dealerships in 2019, making it the luxury brand with the largest dealership network in the United States.

That extensive footprint was notable given that Lincoln trails Cadillac in sales and remains well behind current luxury market leaders BMW and Lexus. Although sales were available to support the network, the operation was not as streamlined as it could have been.

Smaller Network Improves Dealer Profitability

The reduction in dealerships has benefited the stores that remain in Lincoln’s network. Automotive News reports that those locations have increased their throughput, meaning they are closing more deals, while profitability has improved.

These gains have come even as Lincoln’s sales have fallen 12% year over year so far in 2026. The results suggest that a smaller retail footprint has helped strengthen the financial performance of the remaining dealerships despite the decline in sales.

Shawn McDermott, director of the U.S. Lincoln retail network, emphasized the improvement in dealer performance in comments to Automotive News.

“We’re much better when we take a look at the health of the dealer network; their throughput has increased tremendously. It’s really important to have that healthy network that allows those stores to reinvest back into the client experience,” McDermott said.

Lincoln is now in discussions with additional dealers about giving up their franchises as the company works toward its target of fewer than 300 stores by the end of 2027. However, the company will not force dealers who want to keep their facilities to leave the network.

Why Lincoln Sales Fell in 2026

The absence of the Lincoln Corsair is the primary reason cited for the brand’s sales decline this year. The model was dropped from the lineup after the Louisville Assembly Plant, where it was built, began being retooled for electric vehicle production.

The plant changes also led to the discontinuation of the Ford Escape and a temporary halt to Corsair sales in North America.

Unlike the Escape, the Corsair is scheduled to return in 2027. The next version will come from China and will be offered exclusively as a hybrid model.

Could the Corsair’s Return Boost Lincoln in 2027?

The Corsair’s return could help Lincoln recover sales lost during the model’s absence. With the brand already reporting healthier profitability despite the sales decline, the addition of the returning SUV could further improve its financial performance.

Lincoln’s dealership consolidation remains central to its strategy, with the company aiming to operate fewer than 300 standalone stores by the end of 2027. The planned Corsair comeback could provide additional support as the luxury division continues reshaping its lineup and retail network.
