The 2027 BMW iX5 electric SUV has reportedly traveled 550 miles on a single charge during a real-world drive from San Francisco to Newport Beach, California, exceeding its claimed EPA-estimated range by 115 miles. BMW initially aimed to cover 400 miles during the trip, but the all-electric SUV continued well beyond that target. If official EPA testing produces similar results, the iX5 could become one of the longest-range electric SUVs on the market.
BMW iX5 Exceeds Its 435-Mile Range Estimate
BMW unveiled the all-new iX5 alongside its gas-powered counterpart in June. One of the electric SUV’s most notable features is its claimed range of 435 miles under EPA testing standards, supported by a substantial 144-kWh battery pack.
However, a recent real-world drive suggests the iX5 could travel considerably farther between charges. According to BMW Blog, the SUV initially reached 500 miles during the journey before continuing for another 50 miles, bringing its total distance to 550 miles on a single charge.
The achievement was confirmed by Chris Corral, a BMW salesman based in Las Vegas, on X. The available information does not detail the driving conditions or establish whether the driver used hypermiling techniques to maximize the vehicle’s range.
Even with those details unknown, the reported distance puts the iX5 in rare company. The SUV traveled 115 miles farther than its original EPA-based estimate of 435 miles, although the official EPA results have yet to be established in the report.
How the BMW iX5 Compares With Other Long-Range EVs
The iX5’s reported 550-mile drive would put it ahead of several electric vehicles known for their long driving ranges. The only EV with an EPA-estimated range exceeding 500 miles is the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which can travel up to 512 miles on a charge.
However, the Lucid Air Grand Touring is a sleek, low-slung sedan, giving it an aerodynamic advantage over the taller BMW iX5.
Among electric SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Lucid Gravity can both exceed 400 miles of range, but neither approaches the 500-mile mark. The BMW iX5’s direct competitor, the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, has a maximum range of 302 miles.
If the iX5’s reported performance translates into official testing, it could establish a significant range advantage over competing electric SUVs. For now, the 550-mile figure remains a real-world result rather than a confirmed EPA rating.
2027 BMW iX5 Performance and Pricing
The 2027 BMW iX5 will initially launch in 60 xDrive configuration, with a starting price of $79,800. Its dual electric motors produce a combined 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque.
BMW quotes a 0-to-60-mph acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. The iX5 is the first-ever all-electric version of the X5, bringing the model into BMW’s electric SUV lineup.
800-Volt Charging and Next-Generation Battery Technology
Beyond its reported driving range, the BMW iX5 features battery and charging technology developed for the automaker’s latest electric vehicles. Its 800-volt electrical system supports charging speeds of up to 460 kW, allowing the 144-kWh battery to charge from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
The SUV also supports standard AC charging at up to 15.4 kWh. Its Gen6 high-voltage battery uses cylindrical cells that deliver 20% greater energy density than the prismatic cells used in BMW’s Gen5 batteries.
The iX5 also includes bidirectional charging capability, allowing it to supply electricity to external devices or power a home through its Vehicle-to-Home function.
These features add to the SUV’s appeal beyond its potential range advantage, combining high-output performance, next-generation battery technology and the ability to supply power outside the vehicle.
Official EPA Testing Will Be Key to Confirming Range
The reported 550-mile drive raises expectations for the BMW iX5, but its official EPA rating will determine how closely the certified figure matches the real-world result. Even if the SUV achieves only its original 435-mile estimate, it would remain among the range leaders in the midsize electric SUV segment.
The report also points to a recent BMW EV study indicating that the iX5’s range exceeds the expectations Americans have for electric vehicles.
Range, however, will not be the only factor shaping the model’s success. The iX5 features a polarizing exterior design and a spaceship-like interior that differ considerably from what buyers are accustomed to from the X5 nameplate.
The all-new 2027 BMW iX5 is scheduled to become available early in 2027. Until its official EPA results are available, its reported 550-mile journey offers an indication of its potential range rather than a confirmed rating.
