Mercedes-Benz is continuing to invest in SUV coupes despite years of debate over whether the unusual body style deserves a place in the market. The automaker believes the format still attracts a dedicated customer base, with executives pointing to its combination of spacious interiors and sporty styling as reasons to keep models such as the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe in the lineup.

Why SUV Coupes Still Have a Place in the Market

The SUV coupe segment emerged in the mid-2000s by combining the practicality of an SUV with the sloping roofline and sporty appearance of a coupe. When the BMW X6 first arrived, the design quickly divided opinion, with some questioning whether the market needed such a vehicle.

Despite the mixed reactions, SUV coupes have remained part of the automotive landscape. Although the segment is relatively small, several automakers continue to offer models designed to blend SUV space with a sportier look.

Mercedes-Benz is among the brands committed to the format. The German automaker has continued developing coupe-style versions of its SUVs and sedans, offering them with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) powertrains.

Mercedes-Benz Says Demand Remains Strong

According to Motor1, Mercedes-Benz is doubling down on its strategy of giving more vehicles a coupe-inspired design. The publication spoke with Christoph Starzynski, the company’s vice president of product strategy and product steering, who said he continues to see strong demand for the body style.

Starzynski said SUV coupes have a dedicated fan base. He also highlighted their appeal to customers who want a spacious vehicle with the appearance and driving characteristics of a sporty car.

The company’s continued commitment comes despite reports in 2024 that Mercedes-Benz was considering streamlining its lineup and potentially discontinuing its SUV coupes. The GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe remain part of the range, indicating that the format has not been abandoned.

GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe Remain in the Lineup

The two models are at different points in their product cycles. The GLC Coupe has not yet been renewed to match the current-generation GLC, while the GLE received an update for the 2027 model year.

The GLE’s refresh reinforces Mercedes-Benz’s continued support for the SUV coupe design. The company’s comments also suggest that it sees enough customer interest to justify keeping the body style in its portfolio.

Mercedes-Benz Faces Competition From BMW, Audi and Porsche

Mercedes-Benz is not the only automaker competing in the SUV coupe segment. BMW, Genesis, Audi and Porsche all offer vehicles aimed at customers interested in the combination of SUV proportions and coupe-inspired styling.

Audi has multiple options in the category, including the Q5 Sportback and Q8 Sportback. Porsche also offers a coupe version of the Cayenne, including an electric model.

With several major brands continuing to offer SUV coupes, Mercedes-Benz is maintaining its position in a niche segment that has survived despite questions about its appeal. The company says demand remains strong enough to support the format, keeping models such as the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe in its lineup.
