The Ford F-150 Lightning is delivering significant fuel-cost savings for some owners, with one driver reporting that a year of home charging cost roughly the same as a single month of gasoline for a previously owned F-150 Raptor. The owner previously spent about $450 a month on gas but says that amount now covers an entire year of driving the electric pickup.

The experience highlights the potential financial benefits of owning a Ford F-150 Lightning, particularly for drivers who can charge at home. Other owners have reported similar savings, although actual operating costs depend on electricity rates, driving distance and charging habits.

Ford F-150 Lightning Owner Reports a Year of Driving for $450

One Lightning owner shared an image of home charging costs after nearly a year of driving the electric truck. The driver had installed a home charger almost a year earlier and covered roughly 9,000 miles during that period, using public fast charging only once.

“Just thought this would be fun to share, had my home charger installed almost 1 year ago exactly. Roughly 9k miles of usage in that time, only ever fast charged 1x since then,” the owner said.

The driver compared those expenses with the cost of owning a gas-powered F-150 Raptor, which previously required about $450 in gasoline every month.

“Coming from the Raptor I owned previously to this, $450 was my monthly gas bill, and I’ve stretched that into a full year’s worth of driving,” the owner added.

Based on that account, the amount previously spent on one month of gasoline now covers approximately a year of driving the electric pickup.

Other F-150 Lightning Owners Report Fuel Savings

Other Ford F-150 Lightning owners have described lower energy costs after switching from gasoline-powered vehicles.

One driver said the increase in the monthly electricity bill was roughly equivalent to the cost of filling up a previous Toyota Prius, which needed to be refueled twice a month.

Another owner reported smaller savings because of electricity prices in Massachusetts, estimating that the cost difference would amount to $1,500. Even so, the driver said operating the Lightning remained cheaper than running a gasoline-powered F-150.

These experiences illustrate how regional electricity rates can affect the financial benefits of owning an electric pickup. While some drivers report substantial reductions in operating costs, others may see smaller savings depending on where they live.

Home Solar Can Reduce Charging Costs Further

Drivers with home solar panels and battery storage may be able to reduce their charging expenses even further.

One Lightning owner reported that a 40-mile round trip cost just $0.97 in electricity. The same journey in a previous gasoline-powered Ram pickup cost $8 when gas was priced at $4 per gallon.

Another owner reported spending $85.76 per month to operate a Ford F-150 Lightning.

A different owner said he was “saving $500 a month on fuel.” With a monthly vehicle payment of $700, the driver estimated that the savings would soon mean he was “driving for free almost.”

Home Charging Is Key to Ford F-150 Lightning Savings

These reported savings largely depend on owners having access to home charging. The final cost of operating a Ford F-150 Lightning varies according to local electricity prices, monthly mileage and charging methods.

Charging at home overnight is described as the most favorable approach for keeping costs down. Drivers who frequently rely on public DC fast-charging stations may find that higher charging expenses reduce or eliminate some of the financial advantages.

Although individual results vary, these experiences show that home charging can significantly reduce the cost of driving an electric pickup compared with a gasoline-powered truck. The amount saved ultimately depends on the driver’s location, electricity rates and driving habits.
