Chinese automaker BYD’s luxury brand Yangwang is reportedly preparing to introduce the Altior, a high-end electric sedan expected to cost around 2 million yuan (about $300,000). The upcoming model is drawing attention for its Rolls-Royce Ghost-inspired design, potential solid-state battery technology and position as a flagship vehicle that could showcase the brand’s most advanced capabilities.

Yangwang Altior Targets the Ultra-Luxury Market

Chinese automakers have sometimes faced criticism for producing vehicles that resemble established luxury models. The approach can appeal to buyers seeking familiar designs without paying premium prices, but the Yangwang Altior could take a different route with its reported price tag and advanced technology.

Yangwang is BYD’s ultra-luxury division, occupying a position similar to Lexus within Toyota. The Altior is expected to compete in the highest tier of the luxury market, with a projected price of around 2 million yuan (about $300,000).

Its exterior reportedly shares several design characteristics with the Rolls-Royce Ghost, including a traditional three-box sedan silhouette and coach doors. These similarities place the Altior firmly within the styling territory associated with established ultra-luxury sedans.

Flagship Status Could Bring Powerful Technology

As a flagship model, the Yangwang Altior could serve as a showcase for the brand’s most advanced technologies. Although its complete specifications have not been disclosed, the performance of another Yangwang sedan offers a possible indication of the capabilities the company can deliver.

The Yangwang U7, another full-size luxury electric sedan, already produces 1,287 horsepower. The Altior could offer comparable output, although its actual performance figures remain unconfirmed.

The potential use of a solid-state battery is another major point of interest. The technology promises higher energy density, faster charging and improved safety compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries used in most modern electric vehicles.

Solid-State Battery Technology Could Set the Altior Apart

Solid-state batteries remain an important area of development for automakers seeking improvements in electric vehicle performance and battery technology. Even Toyota, the world’s best-selling automaker, is not expected to introduce its first solid-state battery electric vehicles until 2027 or 2028.

Manufacturing costs remain one of the technology’s biggest drawbacks. However, that expense may be less of a concern for a vehicle expected to occupy the same price range as the Mercedes-Maybach S 680.

If the reported battery plans materialize, the Altior could combine ultra-luxury positioning with technology that promises significant advantages over conventional electric vehicle batteries. The company has yet to disclose the model’s full specifications.

Can Yangwang Match Rolls-Royce’s Luxury Credentials?

Although the Altior may borrow design cues from the Rolls-Royce Ghost, matching the established British luxury brand involves more than exterior styling. Rolls-Royce has decades of prestige, craftsmanship, customization and brand recognition that Yangwang cannot replicate in the near term.

That does not diminish Yangwang’s existing achievements. The Chinese marque previously held the record for the fastest production electric vehicle at Germany’s Nürburgring with the U9 Xtreme.

That record was surpassed earlier this year when the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Manthey Kit completed the circuit in 6:55.533, approximately four seconds faster.

Yangwang Altior Reportedly Set for Dubai Debut

Reports suggest the Yangwang Altior will make its debut in Dubai on November 5. Choosing the city for the unveiling suggests that BYD wants to establish Yangwang as a globally recognized luxury brand rather than a marque focused exclusively on Chinese buyers.

However, expanding into international markets presents challenges. The United States continues to keep its doors largely closed to Chinese automakers because of concerns about national security and protecting domestic manufacturing.

As a result, American buyers may have to follow the Altior’s debut and development from afar. The upcoming sedan’s reported price, potential solid-state battery and Rolls-Royce-inspired styling could make it an important test of Yangwang’s ambitions in the global luxury electric vehicle market.
