The 2027 Toyota Tundra expands its off-road lineup with a new Trailhunter package, bringing many of the brand’s specialized trail-focused features to the SR5 trim. Unlike the Trailhunter versions of the 4Runner and Tacoma, the Tundra’s offering is a package rather than a standalone trim and does not include the signature high-rise air intake.
Trailhunter Arrives as an SR5 Package
Toyota has introduced the Trailhunter treatment for the 2027 Toyota Tundra, but with a different approach than its midsize off-road models. Instead of offering Trailhunter as its own trim level, the company makes it available as an optional package on the Tundra SR5.
The package also omits the distinctive high-rise air intake found on the Trailhunter versions of the 4Runner and Tacoma.
Key Off-Road Equipment Included
Despite the different format, the Trailhunter package includes a range of off-road hardware. Buyers receive Old Man Emu suspension, recovery hooks, skid plates, and 265/70 Michelin LTX Trail tires, which measure the equivalent of 31.6 inches in diameter, mounted on 18-inch wheels.
The truck also retains Toyota’s specialized off-road technology, including Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and an electronically locking rear differential.
These features make the package comparable in several ways to the TRD Off-Road package, although that version uses Bilstein shocks and Falken Wildpeak tires.
No Factory High-Rise Intake Included
While the Trailhunter package does not include the high-rise intake featured on the 4Runner and Tacoma Trailhunter models, owners can still install a snorkel if they choose.
Toyota has emphasized that the intake used on the 4Runner and Tacoma Trailhunter models is not a snorkel because it is not water-tight. According to the automaker, its purpose is to raise the air intake location to help reduce the amount of dusty debris entering the engine while also producing more turbocharger sound.
Distinctive Exterior Details
Tundra SR5 models equipped with the Trailhunter package receive bronze wheels and exclusive Trailhunter badging, helping distinguish them from other versions of the full-size pickup.
Gas-Only Powertrain for the Tundra Trailhunter Package
Another key difference between the 2027 Toyota Tundra Trailhunter package and the Trailhunter versions of the 4Runner and Tacoma is the powertrain.
While the 4Runner and Tacoma Trailhunter models come standard with an electrified 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Tundra SR5 Trailhunter package is available only with a gas-powered twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6.
The engine produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Buyers seeking the hybrid powertrain rated at 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque must choose a different Tundra trim.
A More Accessible Off-Road Option
The Trailhunter package offers buyers access to many of Toyota’s off-road features without requiring them to purchase a higher-priced TRD Pro model. As a result, customers can equip an SR5 with trail-focused hardware while foregoing some of the premium features included on more expensive trims.
