Insurance can add significantly to the cost of owning a vehicle, and a new list from Mercury Insurance highlights the 10 EVs and hybrids with the most affordable insurance costs based on its internal analysis. The list shows a clear advantage for hybrids, which account for eight of the 10 vehicles ranked.

Mercury Insurance Ranks the Top 10 EVs and Hybrids

Buying a vehicle involves more than paying the sticker or suggested retail price. Buyers also face destination charges and, most importantly, the ongoing cost of car insurance.

Car insurance is non-negotiable when purchasing a new vehicle or continuing to operate one over the long term. With buyers increasingly considering hybrids and EVs, understanding which models are more affordable to insure can be an important part of the purchase decision.

Mercury Insurance, one of the bigger insurance companies and providers in the U.S., recently released a list ranking the most affordable EVs and hybrids to insure.

Chong Gao, Director of R&D for Mercury Insurance, said, “Understanding insurance costs before making a purchase can help drivers choose the vehicle that best fits both their transportation needs and their budget.”

Hybrids Dominate the Rankings

Mercury Insurance said this year’s list reflects an evolving automotive market, as the majority of consumers are already moving toward more fuel-efficient and sustainable forms of mobility.

The company also said insurance costs for electrified vehicles are influenced by roughly the same factors as traditional vehicles, including repair costs, replacement parts, safety technology and historical claims.

Hybrids Are More Affordable to Insure Than EVs

Mercury Insurance’s analysis examined insurance costs for new 2025-2027 model year hybrids and EVs. The rankings are based on Mercury’s internal insurance analysis, while individual premiums vary depending on driver profile, location, coverage selections and other underwriting factors.

The rankings reveal a significant difference between hybrids and EVs. Hybrids are substantially more affordable to insure and are far more prevalent on the list, accounting for eight of the 10 positions compared with just two EVs.

The Hyundai Santa Fe ranks No. 1 overall, while the Chevy Blazer EV takes the second spot. The remainder of the list is dominated by family-oriented SUVs and minivans, with no sedan making the top 10.

Overall, Mercury Insurance’s rankings highlight the lower insurance costs associated with the hybrid models included in its analysis, while only two EVs made the list of the 10 most affordable vehicles to insure.
