Land Rover has turned its successful 2026 Dakar Rally program into a limited-run road car with the new Defender Dakar, a road-ready evolution of the D7X-R rally machine.

From Dakar Winner to Road-Legal Defender

The Defender Dakar follows the D7X-R, which dominated the 2026 Dakar Rally by winning the Stock class and placing three Defenders first, second and fourth overall in the class. Across 14 days and 24,000 kilometers, the Defenders also swept the podium on 10 of 13 stages.

The D7X-R was developed from the Defender OCTA, and the new Defender Dakar carries that performance-focused formula into a road-going model.

626-HP V8 and Rally-Inspired Suspension

Underneath, the Defender Dakar uses the D7X’s bones, transmission and driveline, along with the OCTA’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Freed from race regulations, the engine produces 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.

The SUV rides on chunky 35-inch all-terrain tires mounted on forged 20-inch wheels. Bilstein Advanced Dampers and coil suspension have been tuned for road use, while Dunes and Gravel drive modes are included.

Flight Mode also makes the transition from rally car to road car. Originally developed for the D7X-R, the system was designed to help the Defender manage landings after becoming airborne.

Rally Styling Remains Front and Center

The Defender Dakar keeps much of the visual character of its rally counterpart. Its equipment includes roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon-fiber raised air intakes and bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, a tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps.

Additional front and underbody protection reinforces its motorsport-inspired design.

The signature exterior combination is Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof, echoing the rally car. Narvik Black and Alaska White will also be available, with optional Matte Protective Film.

A 2+2 Interior Built Around Motorsport

Inside, the Defender Dakar features a 2+2 configuration with special front race seats developed specifically for the model. Buyers can also choose four-point racing harnesses.

The rear storage area is designed to accommodate race helmets, while dedicated space is provided for the spare wheel and air compressor.

That equipment gives the Defender Dakar a more substantial motorsport connection than a conventional performance SUV special edition. It is more than an OCTA with a different paint scheme, bringing genuine rally-inspired hardware and features to the road.

Price and Production Details Remain Unknown

Land Rover has not yet announced pricing, production numbers or the complete specification sheet. The company is already accepting names for the waiting list, with reservations scheduled to open in early 2027.

More details are expected at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

The Defender OCTA is priced around $170,000, providing a reference point for the new model, although the Defender Dakar is expected to cost significantly more.
