BMW is recalling 27,720 vehicles because a driveshaft connection can wear enough to cut power to the rear wheels and, in rare cases, allow a vehicle to roll away while parked. The recall affects several BMW 5 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series models from the 2021 through 2026 model years.

BMW Driveshaft Recall Covers 27,720 Vehicles

According to BMW’s report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves the joint connecting the drivetrain to the rear differential. The connection transfers power from the transmission to the rear wheels, and excessive wear can cause the vehicle to lose drive.

The recall covers the 2022-2026 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive, the 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive and M550i xDrive, and the 2024-2026 750e xDrive.

Driveshaft Failure Could Cause Vehicle to Roll Away

BMW identified two potential failure outcomes. The more unusual scenario could occur if the connection fails while the vehicle is in park and the parking brake is not engaged, potentially allowing the car to roll away on its own.

The other possible outcome is a loss of power to the rear wheels. Both situations increase the risk of a crash, although BMW said it has not received reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue so far.

BMW Dealers Will Inspect and Repair Affected Vehicles

Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear differential. Depending on the condition found during the inspection, technicians will either apply adhesive to reinforce the connection or replace the driveshaft and rear differential.

BMW owners will not have to pay for the recall repairs.

Recall Letters Expected by October 2

BMW plans to begin mailing recall notification letters by October 2. Some owners may not receive a letter because they have moved, purchased their vehicle used or otherwise were not reached through the mailing process.

Owners of the affected BMW models can check their vehicle identification number against the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s database rather than waiting for a notification letter.
