The 2027 Genesis GV90 has arrived as the production interpretation of the Neolun concept, bringing an all-electric powertrain, coach doors, a highly distinctive interior and a range of unusual luxury features to Genesis’ flagship SUV lineup.
Genesis GV90 Brings the Neolun Concept to Life
Genesis revealed the Neolun large SUV concept two years ago as a preview of a future flagship. Now, the 2027 Genesis GV90 has arrived, retaining many of the concept’s most distinctive ideas while adopting the equipment needed for production.
The GV90 is fully electric and rides on Genesis’ bespoke eMP architecture, which the automaker says is exclusive to its flagship products. Its 123.5-kilowatt-hour battery works with front and rear motors to produce a combined 657 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.
Each motor is equipped with its own electronic limited-slip differential. The GV90 also uses multi-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering, while Genesis estimates a range of 310 miles for the seven-seat version.
GV90 Neolun Gets Unique Coach Doors
Performance is not the primary focus of the GV90. Instead, Genesis has packed the flagship SUV with features designed to distinguish it from other luxury vehicles.
The Neolun version gets rear-hinged doors called the Neolun Arch Gate. Unlike conventional coach-door systems, the front and rear doors can open simultaneously and independently.
The rear doors first slide outward before rotating open smoothly. That mechanism also explains why a prototype seen last year had its rear-fender body panel removed, exposing the equipment required to operate the system.
Despite the absence of a traditional B-pillar, Genesis says the GV90 remains highly sturdy. The cabin is enclosed by a frame that is 50% thicker than that of “conventional vehicles,” and the automaker says the GV90 performs as well as vehicles with B-pillars in collisions.
Extensive use of aluminum in the underbody is intended to offset some of the additional weight associated with the structure.
Roof Airbag and Swiveling Seats
The GV90 also features front seats that swivel, complementing the unusual door configuration. An expansive glass ceiling adds another luxury-focused element to the cabin.
More notably, the roof includes its own airbag designed to protect occupants from shards during a rollover. Buyers who choose the most luxurious GV90, the Neolun Executive Suite, get electrochromic glass with adjustable opacity instead of conventional tinted glass.
A Distinctive Exterior Design
The GV90’s exterior closely follows the Neolun concept. Its body panels blend together with a seamless appearance, creating a substantial and solid stance without making the SUV look excessively angular.
The most obvious production change compared with the concept is the size and shape of the side mirrors.
Up front, the GV90 uses a distinctive double-lightbar design. Rather than relying on separate projectors behind the accent lights, the SUV uses its LED strips as the actual headlights.
Genesis calls the technology the Wing Face Micro Lens Array, according to its official release.
GV90 Interior Combines Technology and Luxury
Inside, the GV90 combines an unusual design with an elegant presentation. Available interior colors include green, indigo, purple and a more traditional caramel tone.
There is no conventional instrument binnacle, including a traditional digital version. Instead, driving information is presented through a head-up display.
The central infotainment screen measures 23.6 inches diagonally while driving. Once the GV90 is parked, the display can extend upward by 3.5 inches, creating a larger OLED screen for movies and other content.
The system runs the Android Automotive-based Pleos Connect operating system, Hyundai Group’s latest software.
The GV90 Has No Conventional Power Button
Another unusual feature is the gear-selection system positioned behind the steering wheel. When the GV90 is parked, switched off and unoccupied, the control remains at the 12-o’clock position.
After the driver enters and closes the door, it rotates to the 2-o’clock position, where it functions as a gear-selection stalk.
The unusual approach extends to the vehicle’s startup process: The GV90 does not have a power button.
A Flagship SUV With Its Own Identity
With its coach doors, roof airbag, swiveling seats, unusual gear selector, expansive displays and distinctive lighting, the GV90 has a design and technology package that sets it apart from more conventional luxury SUVs.
The combination of futuristic details and Art Deco-inspired design gives the Genesis flagship its own identity, while its user-interface features add a sense of occasion to everyday interactions.
2027 Genesis GV90 Release and Pricing
Genesis says the GV90 is scheduled to reach dealers in 2027. The company has not yet specified exactly when the SUV will arrive during the year or how much it will cost.
