Geely Holding plans to begin pilot deployment of its solid-state battery technology in 2027, with the rollout expected to reach brands across its network, including Volvo. The company says its next-generation battery packs can achieve a pack-level energy density of 500 Wh/kg, potentially enabling pure electric vehicles to travel more than 621 miles on a single charge.

Geely Targets More Than 621 Miles of EV Range

Real-world validation testing is already underway as Geely works toward its 2027 pilot deployment. The company is also continuing development of ultra-efficient hybrid models alongside its solid-state battery program.

The strategy gives Geely a parallel approach across electric and hybrid vehicles as the industry transitions. Premium brands such as Volvo are positioned to receive the technology as Geely works toward its stated 621-mile electric range target.

Solid-State Battery Technology Doubles Energy Density

The move from current liquid lithium-ion technology to solid-state chemistry represents a major increase in energy density. Geely’s production “Golden Brick” liquid batteries currently reach roughly 250 Wh/kg at the cell level.

Geely says its solid-state packs will reach 500 Wh/kg at the pack level. That means individual cells would need to reach even higher energy densities, effectively doubling energy capacity compared with existing production packs without increasing their physical volume.

Dow Chemical Develops Specialized Adhesives

Geely is working with Dow Chemical on the materials needed for its solid-state battery packs. According to Bo Tong, key account technical leader at Dow Chemical, the company has developed specialized adhesives designed specifically for solid-state cells.

The adhesive is engineered to maintain structural stability across an operating temperature range of -40°F to 248°F. That addresses a key physical challenge involved in constructing solid-state battery packs.

Reliable thermal adhesives and chemical components are part of Geely’s approach to addressing structural durability during development. The company is moving toward pilot production with established supplier partnerships as it works to scale the technology.

Geely’s 2027 Target Faces a Competitive EV Landscape

Geely’s 2027 deployment target comes as the broader EV industry continues to assess the timeline for commercial solid-state batteries. Battery manufacturer CATL currently places its own solid-state efforts at level four on the nine-point Technology Readiness Level scale and is targeting commercial certification later in the decade.

Other major competitors are also working to improve cell longevity as they pursue pilot production by 2027. Legacy automakers such as Honda and Toyota have experienced recurring production delays while scaling solid-state chemistry because of cell degradation and high manufacturing costs.

Geely’s timeline, supported by real-world testing and commercial partnerships, reflects its push toward pilot production. If the company meets its 2027 deployment window, the move could pressure global rivals to accelerate their own electrification schedules.
