The Tesla Model Y L is facing a growing wave of suspension complaints in China, with some owners claiming the rear suspension or wheels “collapsing” after long-distance driving or when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Rear Suspension Complaints Grow
Tesla has rapidly expanded its global presence and model lineup as it faces increasing competition from new Chinese automakers that have taken a share of the electric vehicle market.
One of the latest models from that expansion is the three-row Tesla Model Y L. The model first debuted in Asian markets and has become a sales hit because of its 6-seater capacity. However, complaints about its suspension are now gaining attention in China.
Car News China reported that after a year of production and sales in China, some Tesla Model Y L owners are criticizing the vehicle over claims that its rear wheels or suspension repeatedly “collapse.” The complaints have reportedly become widespread enough to go viral on social media.
Owners Report Rear Suspension Drop
Publication Sina obtained testimonials from owners who said the gap between the rear wheel arch and the tires can drastically narrow after long-distance driving or when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Some owners said the gap became so narrow that, in certain cases, not even a finger could fit between the tire and wheel arch.
The reported mileage at which the issue occurs varies significantly. One owner claimed the “collapse” happened after just 5,500 miles, while another said it occurred at 18,600 miles.
According to one testimonial, the rear suspension collapse increases chassis swaying and can cause the underbody to scrape against the wheel.
Suspension Issue Allegedly Causes Other Damage
Some owners also claim the suspension drop can lead to additional damage. They said the issue affects wheel alignment, resulting in uneven tire wear.
A few owners have claimed that the resulting tire wear became severe enough to push the tires beyond their safe use condition.
Tesla has not released a statement addressing the reported issue. Instead, the company has asked owners to book appointments for servicing.
Tesla Warranty Measurement Requirement
Tesla will only warrant a suspension change if the measurement of the gap falls below 764mm.
One owner who had already received a suspension replacement also claimed that the suspension collapsed again 10 days after the replacement. The owner said Tesla refused to carry out a second suspension replacement, leaving the issue without a final resolution.
It remains unknown whether Tesla Model Y L vehicles in the American market are experiencing the same reported suspension issue.
