Toyota Prius sales have declined sharply in 2026, but new delivery data suggests demand for the hybrid remains stronger than the headline numbers may indicate. A nationwide study of 925 Prius deliveries found that nearly three-quarters were sold before reaching dealer lots.

Toyota Prius Sales Are Down in 2026

Despite significant changes over the decades, the Toyota Prius remains arguably the most recognizable hybrid vehicle on the market. The current fifth-generation model also features a striking exterior that makes it more eye-catching than ever before.

Prius sales have struggled in 2026, with deliveries through August totaling 26,054 units, down 39.4% year over year. However, research from market analysts at Visor.vin suggests Toyota may have a product mix that is closely aligned with current demand.

Nearly 75% of Studied Prius Models Sold Before Arrival

Visor.vin examined 925 Prius deliveries nationwide during July and August 2026. Of those vehicles, 701, or nearly 75%, were sold before arriving at dealerships.

The data showed that 652 vehicles found buyers while still in production, while another 49 were sold while in transit. The remaining 224 vehicles, or about 24%, found customers after arriving on dealer lots.

The findings suggest that while overall Prius sales are lower, a large share of buyers are securing vehicles before they reach dealerships. At the same time, dealer inventory appears sufficient for customers seeking to purchase a Prius directly from showroom stock.

Toyota Prioritized the More Popular Camry

In May, Toyota said the decline in Prius sales during 2026 was partly tied to the automaker’s decision to prioritize the more popular Camry sedan.

Camry sales were up 12.1% through August, reaching 235,334 units. That figure was significantly higher than the 26,054 Prius models sold during the same period.

The Visor.vin research suggests Toyota’s decision to give the Prius less production priority may align with demand patterns, as many buyers are still finding and purchasing vehicles before they arrive at dealerships.

Prius Sales Have Improved From Earlier Declines

The Toyota Prius faced an even steeper decline earlier in the year. Toyota’s April 2026 sales report showed the nameplate’s volume down 66% year over year.

The model has improved its performance over the course of the year, with several months of sales remaining. Other Toyota vehicles have posted strong gains, including the 4Runner, which was up 141% in August.

In August alone, Toyota reported Prius sales of 3,397 units, a decline of 32.1% compared with August 2025.

Which Toyota Prius Models Are Selling the Most?

Beyond sales timing, the Visor.vin data provides a snapshot of the 925 vehicles by market, powertrain, trim level and color.

California was by far the largest market in the study, accounting for 289 vehicles, or roughly 31% of the total. Of those, 183 were sold within 10 days.

Illinois ranked next with 39 Prius sales, followed closely by Washington with 38 units.

Standard Hybrids Lead Prius Sales

Of the 925 vehicles included in the study, 679, or 79%, were equipped with the standard hybrid powertrain. The remaining 176 vehicles, representing 21%, were plug-in hybrids.

The mid-range XLE was the most popular trim, accounting for 234 vehicles, or roughly 25% of the total. The entry-level LE followed closely with 226 sales, while the range-topping Limited recorded 206 units.

White and Gray Remain the Most Popular Colors

Wind Chill Pearl white was the most popular color among the vehicles studied, appearing on 244 cars. Guardian Gray ranked second with 159 sales, followed by Cutting Edge silver with 154 units.

Karashi yellow was the least popular shade in the study, accounting for 24 vehicles. The results closely align with a recent study showing that consumers prefer gray-scale colors for their vehicles.

2027 Toyota Prius Gets Minor Updates

Major changes are not expected for the Prius in the immediate future. The 2027 model gained dual-zone climate control and new color options.

Toyota also slightly adjusted pricing, with all grades becoming $205 more expensive and the destination fee increasing by $100.

Prius Demand Remains Strong Despite Lower Sales

Automakers regularly adjust their product mix as demand shifts between vehicles. For Toyota, the stronger-selling Camry has become a higher priority, while the company continues to offer a significant lineup of hybrid vehicles.

Even with Toyota Prius sales down in 2026, the delivery data shows that thousands of buyers each month remain eager to purchase the hybrid sedan, with many securing their vehicles before they ever reach dealer lots.
