British automaker Bentley is nearing the reveal of its first-ever all-electric vehicle, the Bentley Torcal, releasing new teasers that point to record-setting performance delivered without sacrificing the brand’s signature comfort.
In its latest preview, Bentley said the Torcal will be “the most powerful and fastest-accelerating production Bentley ever created,” while emphasizing that its performance will remain “within the limits of comfort.” The automaker has not released official output figures.
Bentley Torcal Could Deliver More Than 838 Horsepower
MotorTrend recently spent time with the electric SUV and reported that its dual-motor powertrain will produce more than 838 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. However, that may only represent the beginning of the Torcal’s performance potential.
The upcoming Torcal shares much of its makeup with the Porsche Cayenne Electric, which produces up to 1,140 hp and 1,106 lb-ft of torque. That leaves room for Bentley to potentially push performance further, possibly with a future “Speed” variant.
Range and Charging Targets
According to MotorTrend, the Bentley Torcal is targeting up to 373 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, with lower figures expected under EPA testing. The electric SUV is also targeting a 10% to 80% recharge in less than 20 minutes.
On a 400kW charger, Bentley is targeting 100 miles of range from just seven minutes of charging.
The Torcal weighs around 6,000 pounds, but it will receive a Bentley-specific version of the Porsche Cayenne Electric’s active suspension system to help manage that weight. Bentley also says the SUV will have respectable off-road capability despite its focus on effortless acceleration and supreme comfort.
Physical Controls Remain, but One Bentley Feature Is Gone
Other features include physical switchgear and powered doors. However, the organ-stop pulls used to adjust air vents in other Bentley models have been removed, with those controls moving to the touchscreen.
The decision could potentially be revisited when the Torcal is refreshed around 2031.
Bentley Torcal Uses Music-Inspired Artificial Sounds
Unlike many high-end electric vehicles that attempt to recreate the sounds of combustion engines through synthesized recordings, the Bentley Torcal is taking a different approach.
During a recent episode of the Figuring Out podcast, Bentley CEO Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser suggested that the vehicle’s sounds are closely inspired by music. MotorTrend provided additional details, reporting that while the Torcal’s V8-like soundtrack sounds convincing, it was created using live musicians playing drums.
Bentley said the musicians were recorded performing a beat based on the firing order of the iconic 6.75-liter V8, which was last seen in the Bentley Mulsanne in 2020.
Bentley Torcal Reveal Set for September 23
The finished Bentley Torcal will be revealed on September 23. If the launch goes well, Bentley could take the electric model further with special editions in the coming years.
