The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI has arrived as the most powerful GTI model Volkswagen has ever made, delivering 322 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. Unlike every previous GTI, however, the new electric hot hatch sends its power to the rear wheels.
More Power, Different Drivetrain
The ID.3 GTI produces 322 hp, just one horsepower more than the gas-powered GTI Edition 50, which makes 321 hp. That model represented a major increase in power over previous gas GTIs as part of the car’s 50-year celebration.
The new model also marks the first Volkswagen GTI that is not front-wheel drive. Even the first GTI EV, based on the ID.Polo, sends power to the front tires through a 223-hp motor.
Volkswagen says the ID.3 GTI can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds. While that figure is not particularly quick compared with hot electric vehicles, its 402 lb-ft of torque is expected to give the car a more immediate feel.
The ID.3 GTI also features launch control for maximum acceleration from a standstill. A GTI mode can switch the chassis settings to full Sport through a button mounted on the steering wheel, while activating red cabin lighting.
Largest ID.3 Battery Pack
The ID.3 GTI uses the largest battery pack available in the ID.3 lineup. Its 79 kWh battery delivers an estimated 372 miles of range on the WLTP test cycle.
At 183 kW, the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in around 29 minutes.
GTI Styling With Rear-Wheel Drive
While the electric powertrain changes the way the ID.3 GTI sounds and its rear-wheel-drive layout changes how it feels, Volkswagen has given the model familiar GTI styling.
The car features the expected red-trim grille and lower bumper, along with larger wheels and tires. Red paint can conceal some of the details, but the GTI design cues remain visible.
Inside, the ID.3 GTI introduces a new take on the classic Clark tartan pattern. Called “Superclark,” the design features just one intersection on each seat instead of the traditional checkered pattern.
Additional red accents contribute to the GTI-themed interior, including red contrast stitching on the steering wheel.
Updated Interior and Available Features
The ID.3 GTI receives the same interior updates as the refreshed ID.3 Neo, with changes tailored for GTI duty. The digital cockpit displays feature new graphics, while a rotary knob provides volume and skip controls.
Volkswagen will also offer the ID.3 GTI with a range of available equipment, including massage seats, a panoramic roof and a 480-watt Harman Kardon audio system.
The car can also be equipped with vehicle-to-load capability, allowing it to power other electric devices. Volkswagen specifically suggests using the system to charge an e-bike mounted on the optional rack for a mixed-travel weekend adventure.
With 322 horsepower, 402 pound-feet of torque, rear-wheel drive and a 79 kWh battery, the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI combines the GTI identity with an electric powertrain and a drivetrain layout that marks a first for the model.
