The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is entering real-world testing as BMW evaluates how its fuel-cell powertrain performs under environmental challenges and high-load conditions. The performance-oriented hydrogen SUV is targeting acceleration comparable to the upcoming all-electric BMW iX5.

BMW iX5 Hydrogen Targets Less Than 5 Seconds to 62 MPH

BMW has confirmed that the iX5 Hydrogen is targeting a 0 to 62 mph sprint in less than 5 seconds, signaling a significant performance target for the automaker’s first-ever hydrogen vehicle.

For comparison, the upcoming all-electric BMW iX5 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of up to 130 mph. Earlier iX5 Hydrogen prototypes were claimed to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 6 seconds, meaning the series production vehicle is targeting a notable improvement in performance.

The iX5 Hydrogen uses a third-generation fuel-cell system jointly developed by BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation. BMW says the system is more powerful and efficient while being 25 percent more compact than its previous iteration.

BMW has claimed that the iX5 Hydrogen will offer a WLTP-claimed range of up to 466 miles. The SUV will also feature BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the M Sport package.

Hydrogen Refueling Takes Less Than 5 Minutes

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen uses a flat tank system positioned beneath the floor, allowing the cabin to retain its usable space. The system includes seven high-pressure fuel tanks made from reinforced carbon fiber.

The tanks are connected in parallel and enclosed within a metal frame for added safety. Multiple chambers are combined into a single enclosed unit and controlled through a main central valve.

The hydrogen tanks can hold up to 15.4 pounds of hydrogen. According to BMW, refueling takes less than 5 minutes.

BMW Tests the Full Hydrogen Powertrain

BMW is testing the iX5 Hydrogen prototype across varied driving conditions to evaluate its driving dynamics and overall performance. The testing also examines how the vehicle’s individual drive components work together.

These components include the fuel-cell system, high-voltage battery, electric motor, hydrogen tanks and overall system control unit. BMW’s goal is to ensure that each component performs as intended and that the complete system responds reliably under all conditions.

Fuel Cell Production and Prototype Assembly

Series manufacturing of the fuel-cell system will take place at BMW Group Plant Steyr. Meanwhile, the next prototype assembly phase is getting underway at the Hydrogen Competence Centre in Munich.

BMW is primarily focusing on testing its methodology for the industrialization of fuel-cell technology as development of the iX5 Hydrogen continues.

BMW iX5 Hydrogen Launch Timeline

The rollout will begin with the launch of the fifth-generation BMW X5 40 xDrive in October. BMW will then introduce rear-wheel-drive, plug-in hybrid and all-electric iX5 models in the first quarter of 2027.

A more powerful V8-powered version of the SUV is also scheduled to make its market debut later next year. BMW’s first-ever series hydrogen vehicle, the iX5 Hydrogen, is expected to make its debut later in 2028.
