The Mazda3 could get a performance version as early as the first half of 2027, according to a report from Japan, potentially marking Mazda’s return to the hot-hatch segment after 13 years.
Mazda’s Last Hot Hatch Was the Mazdaspeed3
Mazda has produced relatively few hot hatchbacks, but its performance models have included the 323 GT-X and the Mazdaspeed3. The 323 GT-X was a homologation special for the World Rally Championship, while the Mazdaspeed3 arrived decades later as Mazda’s next major performance hatch.
The Mazdaspeed3, known as the Mazda3 MPS in other parts of the world and the Axela MPS in Japan, was produced from 2007 to 2013 across two generations. It remains Mazda’s last hot hatch, with the company not building another performance hatch since.
Both generations used a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine producing 263 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Power was sent to the front wheels through a limited-slip differential rather than an all-wheel-drive system, making torque steer a defining characteristic of the car.
A Possible Mazda3 Performance Return
According to MotorFan, the Mazda3, now in its seventh year of production, could receive a performance version. The report points to the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 concept, which was unveiled at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon.
The concept debuted alongside the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster and later became a limited-run production model. It received more power and handling upgrades than the standard MX-5 and produced 200 horsepower without turbocharging, relying instead on hardware and software tuning.
Potential 300-HP Powertrain
MotorFan cited its “informants” regarding the possible powertrain for the performance Mazda3. According to the information provided to the publication, the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine in the current model is the leading candidate for tuning.
That engine currently produces 255 hp and 317 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular gas. The report suggests the engine could potentially be developed to produce about 300 hp.
That output would put the possible Mazda3 performance model directly in the crosshairs of the GR Corolla. The report also indicates a strong possibility of all-wheel drive, which could address the torque-steer criticism associated with the previous Mazdaspeed3.
If Mazda adopts all-wheel drive, it would also echo the approach used by the often-forgotten 323 GTX.
Possible 2027 Arrival
The information cited by MotorFan claims the performance Mazda3 could arrive as early as the first half of 2027. The report connects that possibility to the Mazda Spirit Racing 3, whose path toward production could follow the commercial viability demonstrated by the Spirit Racing brand with the MX-5.
For now, the reported performance Mazda3 remains a possibility, but the information points toward a potential return of Mazda’s hot hatch after a 13-year absence.
