Hyundai has patented a modular removable hardtop system that could make taking roof panels off and reinstalling them easier for a single person. Discovered by Car and Driver, the Modular Canopy Assembly System patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Hyundai’s Modular Roof Panel Design

The patent describes a modular roof system in which the panels can be installed and removed individually rather than requiring the entire roof to be handled at once. Strategically placed magnets would help position the side panels on the vehicle and keep them from falling over.

Once the side panels are installed, the rear panel can be added. Before the roof panel is positioned, large plastic nuts are turned into place. The roof panel is then lowered into position, with additional magnets helping guide it into place.

The user would then climb inside the vehicle and turn the securing latches, which are described as being similar to those used on Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler hardtops. According to the patent concept, the lightweight panels and guided installation process could allow one person to install or remove the hardtop in just a few minutes.

Different Roof Configurations

The modular approach could allow users to leave some panels off while keeping others secured. One possible configuration would leave the cabin open while covering the cargo area, helping keep groceries relatively cool.

Another potential arrangement could cover the middle section while leaving other areas open, allowing an infant in the second row to avoid direct sunlight.

The design could also potentially be expanded to accommodate accessories such as awnings, tents or framed soft-top panels.

Could the System Reach Production?

A patent application does not guarantee that an invention or idea will reach production. However, the patent sketches depict a boxy SUV, a design that could fit a production version of Hyundai’s Boulder concept.

Earlier this year, Hyundai revealed the Boulder concept as part of its push toward a more rugged image. Hyundai is also working on a pickup that will share the same body-on-frame underpinnings as the real-life Boulder will if and when it arrives.

The magnetic roof panel system could potentially work on that pickup as well, offering a direct alternative to the Jeep Gladiator.

Hyundai’s Rugged Lineup

Hyundai has plans for XRT and XRT Pro variants across its lineup. Features such as the modular roof system could help support the brand’s effort to build greater credibility around its rugged vehicles.
