The Mitsuoka LA1 is the latest retro-styled roadster from Japan’s niche automaker, and its design reaches even further into Corvette history than the company’s Rock Star. Inspired by the original Corvette C1 of the 1950s, the LA1 brings classic American styling cues to a modern roadster base.
Mitsuoka LA1 Brings Back Corvette C1 Styling
Mitsuoka has released images showing the full exterior of the LA1 ahead of its official debut. The company is Japan’s 10th car manufacturer and is known for transforming everyday Japanese cars with dramatically different styling.
The LA1 follows the Mitsuoka Rock Star, a Chevrolet Corvette C2-inspired sports car based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata. While the Rock Star drew inspiration from the 1960s Corvette era, the LA1 takes its design cues directly from the original Corvette C1 of the 1950s.
The front features a rounded fascia with twin circular headlights housed in chrome bezels. A wide chrome grille spans the nose, while a chrome bumper with prominent overriders adds to the classic American sports car appearance.
Retro Details Define the LA1
Large white side coves dominate the LA1’s profile, directly referencing the Corvette C1. The front fenders flow into rounded rear haunches, giving the LA1 a softer and more organic appearance than the sharper Rock Star.
At the rear, the design continues the Corvette-inspired theme with teardrop taillights, large chrome bumpers and a subtle hint of tail fin styling.
Mitsuoka is also offering a color palette inspired by the 1950s. Available choices include pastel green, light blue, gray, bright red, ivory white, plain white and black, with most configurations featuring the signature white side coves.
A black soft top, retro wheels and white-letter tires complete the vintage-inspired appearance. Modern side mirrors, contemporary lighting and proportions associated with the Mazda roadster remain visible upon closer inspection.
LA1 Specs Remain Under Wraps
Mitsuoka has not yet revealed the LA1’s specifications, and the company’s teaser website provides few additional details. Based on the formula used for the Rock Star, the LA1 is expected to use the current-generation Mazda Roadster, known as the MX-5 Miata outside Japan.
That setup is expected to retain the roadster’s lightweight, rear-wheel-drive chassis and naturally aspirated engine, although Mitsuoka has not confirmed those specifications for the LA1.
Interior Details Are Still Unknown
Mitsuoka has not shown the LA1’s interior, leaving its cabin design undisclosed. It is not yet clear whether the automaker will give the interior a fully retro treatment or use unique trim and badges alongside the standard Mazda dashboard.
The full details of the Mitsuoka LA1 are expected to arrive in November, while the newly revealed exterior establishes its strong connection to the original Corvette C1.
