The 2027 Subaru Crosstrek will continue with gas-powered trims in the United States despite a major change for the Japanese market, where Subaru is moving the lineup to hybrid power only. The U.S. model will also avoid a base-price increase, while the Impreza receives updates in Japan.

Subaru Crosstrek Keeps Its Gas Engine in the U.S.

First launched for the 2013 model year, the Subaru Crosstrek has become one of the brand’s core products in the United States. Through August 2026, Subaru has delivered 122,953 Crosstreks in the country, making it the automaker’s second-best-selling model behind the Forester, which has recorded 140,487 deliveries during the same period.

By comparison, Impreza sales have fallen 43% year over year to 11,396 vehicles.

Subaru is now updating both the Crosstrek and Impreza for the Japanese market. Some of those changes could eventually reach the United States, but Subaru says the Japanese-market move away from a combustion-only Crosstrek will not happen in the U.S. anytime soon.

“We have no plans to discontinue the ICE-only Crosstrek in the US. We announced the 27MY Crosstrek in July, including ICE-only trims, which are assembled in Indiana,” Subaru said.

Japan’s Crosstrek Lineup Goes Hybrid-Only

In Japan, Subaru will offer the Crosstrek only with its hybrid powertrain, ending the availability of the pure-combustion version there.

The change does not apply to the United States. Subaru builds the hybrid Crosstrek in Japan, while the ICE version sold in North America is produced at its Indiana factory. That allows the company to adjust its production mix based on demand in each region.

The Crosstrek Hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine with electric-motor assistance, producing a total of 194 horsepower in the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the hybrid at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 36 mpg combined.

The combustion-powered Crosstrek is rated at 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined.

Japanese Crosstrek Gets Small Design and Technology Changes

The Japanese-market Crosstrek also receives several smaller updates. Its roof rails are now black instead of dark gray, while the e-BOXER badge on the rear has been redesigned.

Subaru will also offer the SUV in Ignition Red. Some trims can be equipped with an optional Harman Kardon stereo and navigation, technology that is already available on the Crosstrek in the U.S.

The Crosstrek remains a relatively niche product in Japan compared with the United States. Subaru projects monthly sales of 500 units there, or 6,000 annually. In the U.S., the company sold 19,541 Crosstreks in August alone.

Subaru does not report U.S. Crosstrek deliveries separately by ICE and hybrid powertrain, so it is unclear which version is more popular in the American market.

In the U.S., the 2027 Crosstrek Sport Hybrid starts at $33,995, plus a $1,475 destination fee. The better-equipped Limited Hybrid starts at $35,995.

2027 Subaru Crosstrek Keeps Its Base Price

Subaru is making changes to the U.S. Crosstrek lineup while keeping the model’s starting price unchanged. One gas-powered hatchback trim will be discontinued, but Subaru is adding several new paint colors.

The 2027 Crosstrek will continue to start at $26,995. The destination charge will increase by $55, bringing the base model’s price to at least $28,470 including destination charges. That is only $55 more than the 2026 model.

The same $55 increase applies across the lineup, including the Premium, Sport Hybrid, Limited and Wilderness trims. The Limited Hybrid is the exception, with a $1,000 increase in its MSRP.

Subaru Updates the Impreza in Japan

Subaru is also making changes to the Japanese-market Impreza. An available option package adds full LED high and low beams, steering-linked headlights, a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory, an eight-way power passenger seat and auto-folding door mirrors.

Japanese buyers can continue to choose a front-wheel-drive Impreza, which also gains new options including LED rear fog lights, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

Subaru expects to sell 520 Imprezas per month in Japan, or 6,240 annually. The company sold 1,556 Imprezas in August and 11,396 through that point in the year.

U.S. Impreza Pricing and Powertrains

In the United States, the 2026 Subaru Impreza starts at $26,595, plus a $1,195 destination fee.

The base Sport trim uses a naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder engine producing 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The higher RS trim starts at $29,495 and uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder producing 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque.

For the U.S. market, Subaru is retaining gas-powered Crosstrek trims for the 2027 model year while keeping the model’s starting price at $26,995, even as the Japanese-market Crosstrek moves to a hybrid-only lineup.
