The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are getting redesigned seats as General Motors looks to improve comfort in its full-size pickup trucks. The changes go beyond new foam, with wider seat structures and three different contours designed around different customer preferences.
Wider Seats Designed for More Comfort
Pickup trucks have traditionally been viewed as less comfortable than passenger cars, although modern trucks have moved well beyond their earlier workhorse-focused designs. For the 2027 model year, GM is addressing comfort with a significant seat redesign for the Silverado and Sierra.
Ben Kelly, GM full-size truck program engineering manager, told GM Authority that the changes involve more than simply replacing the foam. The new seats are wider, while their contours are offered in three different shapes intended to target specific customer preferences.
The seats are 26 mm wider, including both the cushion and the underlying seat frame. Although the increase is just over an inch, the wider structure moves occupants farther away from the metal frame rather than simply adding additional padding.
Three Seat Contours for Different Buyers
The redesigned seats will be offered with three contour types: base-level, lux-level and sport-level.
The report did not provide detailed descriptions of each contour. Their names, however, indicate the different preferences they are intended to address, with the base-level contour aimed at more affordable trims such as the WT.
The sport-level contour is intended for performance-oriented trims and is designed to keep drivers more firmly in place, particularly when driving on unpaved roads. The lux-level contour is expected to feature more premium cushioning focused on comfort.
Modern Silverado and Sierra Cabins
The redesigned seats will be installed in cabins that have also become significantly more modern. Higher-end trims can feature triple-screen dashboard setups.
The Chevrolet Silverado, for example, receives a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster. The ZR2 and High Country also get an additional 11.5-inch passenger screen.
New Powertrains for 2027
The redesigned trucks are expected to arrive later this year, giving buyers an opportunity to determine how much the new seats change the cabin experience.
GM has also confirmed new powertrain options for the trucks, including Gen 6 small-block V8 engines. The lineup includes the 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78.
Those engines replace the 5.3-liter L84 and 6.2-liter L87, respectively. The 2.7-liter TurboMax inline-four has also been upgraded, while the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel remains available.
The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will combine the redesigned seating with updated cabin technology and new powertrain options as GM prepares the full-size trucks for their arrival later this year.
