The Honda CR-V hybrid could arrive sooner than expected as Honda prepares a new generation of the popular SUV, potentially giving the model another opportunity to challenge the all-hybrid Toyota RAV4 after Toyota’s production problems hurt sales earlier this year.

Next CR-V Hybrid Could Arrive Before Summer

Honda has been developing a revised platform and powertrain for its small to midsize hybrids, including the Civic, CR-V and Accord. The company shared details and demonstrated a test car late last year, with expectations that either a new hybrid Civic or CR-V would appear toward the end of 2026.

That timeline now appears to point toward the CR-V. Japanese news outlet Nikkei reports that production of the new CR-V hybrid will begin in Canada in February, followed by production at Honda’s plants in Indiana and Ohio in March. That timing could mean the vehicles reach dealerships before summer.

The new CR-V hybrid is expected to be substantially different from the current model, despite the current generation having been around only since the 2023 model year.

New Chassis and Hybrid Powertrain Updates

Much of the change will come from a new chassis that is lighter and up to 10% cheaper to produce. The updated powertrain will continue using a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but Honda is adding direct fuel injection and new electric motors to improve efficiency.

Honda is also adding simulated shifting from the Prelude, along with power-control features designed to aid handling. The new hybrid is also expected to have a surprisingly sporty exhaust note.

Why the New CR-V Matters for Toyota

The Toyota RAV4 could recover once production returns to full pace. However, improvements in efficiency and production costs combined with the CR-V’s driving dynamics could put additional pressure on Toyota’s sales.

The RAV4 will also face new competition beyond Honda. Nissan is preparing to launch its first hybrid Rogue in years, while Hyundai has revealed a completely new Tucson for next year with stand-out styling and a larger size.

The new Rogue is based on a completely new platform that will eventually also support a combustion-only version. Experience with a prototype showed serious potential in the segment, adding another challenge for the RAV4 as Toyota’s production begins to pick up.

2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid Brings New Competition

The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are among the most popular cars in the country. With the RAV4 already offered as an all-hybrid lineup and the CR-V hybrid trim approaching, Nissan is preparing to enter the competition with a hybrid Rogue.

The brand’s upcoming hybrid Rogue is based on a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 hybrid system that produces 225 horsepower combined with all-wheel drive. It has an estimated 40/36/38 mpg city/highway/combined rating and can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

The 2027 Rogue Hybrid will also offer available features including a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, surround-view cameras, rear-seat heating and front-seat ventilation.

A recent prototype drive provided an early look at the Rogue Hybrid’s design, space, technology and powertrain, with a comprehensive full-drive review of the production model still to come.
