General Motors has issued a stop-sale order affecting certain 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Corvette C8 vehicles due to a malfunction in the rear brake light outage detection system. The issue prevents the system from alerting drivers when a rear turn-signal lamp fails, leaving no warning light or audible notification.

The automaker identified 2,886 affected units from the 2026 model year and 438 from 2025, for a total of about 3,300 vehicles. Dealers have been instructed not to deliver any of the affected cars until the issue is resolved.

A fix is currently available for 2026 models through a software update, either via a dealership service or over-the-air installation. The affected 2025 vehicles are still awaiting a solution.

Safety Implications

While the issue may appear minor, the malfunction could leave drivers unaware of a failed turn signal. Without proper indication, drivers may unknowingly change lanes or make turns without signaling, increasing the risk of traffic violations or collisions.

The outage detection system is designed to notify drivers of such failures, addressing a limitation in older vehicles where drivers had to identify these issues manually.

The Corvette C8 has faced multiple regulatory concerns since its introduction. In 2025, certain Z06 and ZR1 models were subject to a voluntary recall due to a potential fire risk. Additionally, some vehicles reportedly experienced issues while being serviced on lifts.
