Ford Motor Company has claimed the top spot on Time magazine’s inaugural “America’s Most Iconic Companies” ranking, surpassing well-known U.S. brands including Apple, McDonald’s, and Walmart. The recognition highlights Ford’s enduring influence on American culture and its sustained commercial success.
To qualify for Time’s list, companies had to be founded and headquartered in the United States, with a market presence of at least 10 years. Ford, established in Michigan in 1903 and renowned for the Model T, easily meets these criteria. The rankings were compiled from more than 10,000 responses from U.S. residents, representing over 100,000 individual assessments.
The evaluation criteria included high recognition and familiarity, cultural significance and impact, emotional connection, resilience, and “Americanness.” Ford’s iconic F-150 pickup played a central role in its ranking. The vehicle, available in a wide range of trims from work-focused models to luxury and off-road variants, has consistently been among America’s best-selling vehicles, facing competition from rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota RAV4.
General Motors, Ford’s Detroit-based competitor and owner of Chevrolet, also made the list, ranking seventh between McDonald’s and Microsoft. Meanwhile, Ford’s luxury subsidiary, Lincoln, continues to expand its global reach, including a joint venture with China’s Changan Automobile, producing vehicles designed for the Chinese market.
Ford is also investing heavily in motorsports, preparing for a return to Formula 1, making it one of the few American brands competing in the European-dominated series, alongside Haas. Time credited Ford’s success to its alignment with American identity, particularly by providing vehicles for the mass market and leading innovation in mobility. This includes self-driving technologies and efforts to make electric vehicles more affordable, highlighted by the all-electric F-150 Lightning’s production initiatives.
Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford Motor Company, said, “We are leveraging our position as the largest hourly auto employer in the U.S. to ensure that the future of transportation is built by American workers for everyday American families.”
