Mini is entering the Rebelle Rally for the first time, using the 1,500-mile off-road navigation challenge to test a more rugged version of the Countryman. The prototype will compete in the 11th running of the women-only U.S. rally from October 7 through 17.

Mini Takes the Countryman Off Road

The Rebelle Rally is an annual off-road navigation rally raid specifically for women, with several automakers sponsoring teams to showcase their vehicles to off-road enthusiasts.

Mini is joining the event this year with a prototype Countryman that is designed to offer greater off-road capability. The 1,500-mile rally will provide the setting for the automaker to demonstrate what the modified SUV can do.

Mini has not yet revealed the name of the new Countryman variant, and the vehicle remains covered in camouflage. However, development photos reveal several details about the more rugged model.

A large roof-mounted accessory appears to be a pop-up tent, while a skid plate protects vital mechanical components from rocks and debris. The prototype also rides on Toyo Open Country AT tires and appears to feature suspension modifications that provide a taller ride height.

Rebelle Rally Partners Equip the Countryman

Mini’s partners for the Rebelle Rally project offer additional clues about the vehicle’s equipment. Morimoto Lighting is supplying auxiliary lamps mounted on the roof and grille, although they are not visible on the test vehicle.

Pelican Cases is providing the team with weatherproof storage boxes, while a GoPro action camera will be used to record the adventure.

So far, there are no indications of powertrain changes for the Countryman off-roader. The SUV currently offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 241 horsepower, while the JCW version uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing 312 hp.

Both versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Mini’s All4 all-wheel-drive system.

Felicia Killman and Erika Ferrer to Drive

The modified Countryman will be driven in the Rebelle Rally by Felicia Killman and Erika Ferrer. The pair have already completed an off-road training trip in the vehicle to become familiar with its increased capability.

Mini’s Limited-Edition Models

The rugged Countryman does not signal a complete shift away from Mini’s road-going focus. The brand has also announced plans to bring eight limited-edition models to the U.S. to maintain excitement across its lineup.

Among them is the Mini 1998 GT Edition, which adds John Cooper Works performance components for the suspension and brakes to the entry-level Mini Cooper C 2-Door.

The special edition features a Midnight Black Metallic body with orange stripes along the lower sides, along with sporty JCW body parts. Additional badges inside identify the special edition.

Mini has also announced a Paul Smith edition with subtle styling changes. It will be offered in Statement Grey, Inspired White and Midnight Black Metallic, with Nottingham Green accents on the mirrors, grille and roof.

The Oxford Edition adds exclusive exterior colors including Sunny Side Yellow, Blazing Blue Metallic and Nanuq White Metallic. It also features contrasting black roof and mirror-cap components, while the cabin gets sport seats finished in a Gray/Blue Vescin and cloth combination.

For now, Mini’s first Rebelle Rally entry provides a look at a more rugged Countryman prototype, while the brand continues preparing its lineup of limited-edition models for the U.S. market.
