The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV could be headed for a full redesign in 2028, according to a new report from Japan. The Outlander remains one of Mitsubishi’s top sellers in the U.S., with more than 18,000 units sold by June 2026 across both gas and plug-in hybrid versions.

The current Outlander has been sold in the U.S. since 2022 and globally since 2021. Despite a recent update, its underlying design is beginning to age, setting the stage for a possible next-generation model.

Next-Generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Reportedly Due in 2028

Japanese outlet Response reports that Mitsubishi is planning a full model overhaul for the Outlander PHEV in 2028. Mitsubishi has not confirmed the plan in writing, but the report says the next-generation SUV will build further on the company’s plug-in hybrid technology while advancing its all-wheel-drive system.

A seven-year production run would fit Mitsubishi’s usual approach, making 2028 a potential timing for a completely new Outlander. The next model is also expected to place greater emphasis on electrification rather than treating the plug-in hybrid system as an addition to the lineup.

Mitsubishi is reportedly developing a larger battery and a more advanced plug-in hybrid system that could enable more electric-only driving. For comparison, the latest Japanese Outlander PHEV already uses a 22.7-kWh battery, up from the previous 20-kWh unit.

Outlander Could Get More Advanced All-Wheel Drive

Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system could also receive a major upgrade, with the technology first arriving with the Pajero.

The current Outlander PHEV uses two electric motors, with one positioned on each axle. The next-generation model could take that approach further with more precise control at each wheel.

However, Response says Mitsubishi could retain the twin-motor configuration if development costs become an obstacle.

Mitsubishi Elevance Concept Could Preview the Next Outlander

The Mitsubishi Elevance Concept is presented as the leading candidate to become the next Outlander. Mitsubishi showcased the concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, although the automaker has not confirmed that it will enter production.

The concept features technology that Mitsubishi says will shape the future of its electrified SUVs. Its plug-in hybrid setup combines a large battery with a gas engine designed to use carbon-neutral fuels.

The most notable feature is a quad-motor all-wheel-drive system, with one electric motor powering each wheel. It is paired with next-generation S-AWC dynamics technology.

Elevance Concept Shows Mitsubishi’s Future Interior

The Elevance Concept also provides a preview of Mitsubishi’s potential future interior design. Its cabin features a panoramic dashboard display, an AI co-driver that adapts to the driver and a more upscale environment inspired by the brand’s “Luxe Adventurer” theme.

Mitsubishi has not yet shared production details for the concept or confirmed the reported 2028 redesign. It also remains unclear whether the company will discontinue the pure combustion model or continue with a two-pronged approach.

If the Japanese report is accurate, the next Mitsubishi Outlander could bring significant changes to its powertrain, all-wheel-drive technology and overall design.
