The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is facing another delay in the U.S., with the electric retro minivan now expected to return during the first half of 2027 as a 2028 model year vehicle. The latest change comes after Volkswagen pulled the ID. Buzz from the U.S. lineup for the 2026 model year following disappointing sales in its first full year on the market.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz Takes Another Model-Year Break

The ID. Buzz first appeared as a concept in 2017, drawing attention with styling inspired by the Type 2 Microbus and a strong nostalgic theme. Volkswagen ultimately moved the concept into production as an electric vehicle.

Production began in 2022, with Europe receiving the model first. The U.S. market had to wait until the 2025 model year for the ID. Buzz to arrive.

However, sales were limited. During its first full year on sale in the U.S., Volkswagen sold just 6,140 vehicles in 2025.

Volkswagen subsequently removed the ID. Buzz from the U.S. market for the 2026 model year, saying the decision was made to clear existing inventory. At the time, the company said the electric minivan would return for 2027.

ID. Buzz Return Pushed Back to 2027

Those plans have now changed again. According to a report from Automotive News, the ID. Buzz will relaunch sometime during the first half of 2027 instead of fall 2026.

That timing means the vehicle will return as a 2028 model year, causing the ID. Buzz to skip another model year in the U.S.

Volkswagen has not provided much detail about the reason for the delay. The company said, “The 2028 ID Buzz brings together meaningful customer-focused enhancements in a single launch, further elevating the ownership experience and strengthening the vehicle’s appeal.”

What’s Changing for the 2028 ID. Buzz

Volkswagen has promised several updates for the returning ID. Buzz. The changes include more physical controls on the steering wheel and a NACS charging port with a CCS adapter.

A new Tourer model will also join the lineup and is aimed at camper types. Volkswagen is additionally preparing new infotainment software, enhanced vehicle-to-load capabilities and a one-pedal driving mode.

The lineup will add a Pro S 4Motion model, while all-wheel drive will be available as an option for the Tourer.

Price and Range Remain Key ID. Buzz Issues

Before Volkswagen removed the ID. Buzz from U.S. showrooms, the electric minivan carried a starting price of $59,995. Its relatively high price was one of the biggest criticisms of the model.

The ID. Buzz also offered a range of 234 miles, which may have contributed to concerns surrounding the vehicle.

The combination of its starting price and limited range may have been a factor in the ID. Buzz’s slow sales during 2025. Volkswagen sold 6,140 units during the model’s first full year in the U.S.

Volkswagen Plans More ID. Buzz Updates

The ID. Buzz is now scheduled to return to the U.S. during the first half of 2027 as a 2028 model. Volkswagen says it will keep the market informed about additional updates to the upcoming models.
