A Honda Prelude owner in Japan got an early look at the revived coupe’s depreciation after taking the car to his local Honda dealership for a trade-in appraisal after one year of ownership. The offer valued the car at about 68% of its original purchase price despite having traveled just under 10,000 kilometers.
Honda Prelude Trade-In Value Falls After One Year
Most new cars lose about half their value after five years, although depreciation varies significantly by vehicle type. Trucks, hybrids and some sports cars tend to retain their value longer, while luxury cars and unusual models can lose value much faster.
According to Creative Trend, the Japanese publication where the owner shared his experience, he was among the first people in Japan to get the new Prelude. After 12 months and just under 10,000 kilometers, or about 6,200 miles, he asked his Honda dealer to determine what the car was worth as a trade-in.
The dealer’s appraisal came in at 4.2 million yen, equivalent to about $26,700 at today’s rates.
That figure compares with an original purchase price of 6,179,800 yen, or about $39,300. The trade-in offer therefore represented approximately 68% of what the owner originally paid after just one year.
Appraisal Nears Honda’s Three-Year Residual Estimate
Creative Trend noted that Honda’s estimated three-year residual value for the Prelude is around 67%, based on typical monthly mileage assumptions.
That means the owner’s real-world dealer appraisal after one year was already close to the value Honda estimates after three years under those assumptions.
For buyers considering the Prelude as a future classic or expecting it to retain its value, the appraisal highlights the importance of checking actual resale figures. The owner also pointed out that this was only a dealer appraisal, meaning a private sale could produce a different result.
Prelude Ownership Remains Positive
The disappointing trade-in figure has not diminished the owner’s experience with the Prelude. After a year, the coupe has remained rock-solid, with no major issues or unusual noises.
The car has had a previously fixed front hood and a few other gripes the owner had shared earlier. The appraisal was conducted by the same Honda dealer that has handled all of the vehicle’s service.
Honda Prelude Delivers Strong Fuel Economy
Fuel economy has also been a positive part of the ownership experience. The owner is averaging 56.5 mpg overall, with long trips returning between 59 and 71 mpg on local roads and 52 to 56 mpg on the highway.
Rather than counting on the Prelude becoming a collector’s item, the owner believes it is best enjoyed as a grand tourer that combines sharp looks, daily comfort and hybrid fuel efficiency.
Despite the low trade-in appraisal, he has no plans to sell anytime soon and intends to keep driving the Prelude for at least another couple of years.
