The Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling EV in the U.S. by a wide margin, but strong demand is now translating into significantly longer delivery times for some versions of the electric SUV.
Tesla Model Y Demand Drives Longer Waits
Cox Automotive estimates that Tesla sold 163,454 Model Ys in the U.S. during the first half of this year, an increase of about 8.8% year over year. The Model Y accounted for roughly 35% of all EV sales during that period, despite the broader EV market taking a tumble in late 2025.
There is currently no imminent sign of a slowdown in demand. The addition of the new Model Y L has expanded the lineup, while elevated gas prices have also increased interest in EVs.
According to CarsDirect, demand for the Model Y has pushed delivery windows out by as much as five months. However, wait times vary depending on the trim, meaning some versions remain available sooner than others.
Model Y L Buyers Face the Longest Wait
The Model Y L Premium, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, has the longest estimated delivery window. Buyers are currently looking at January to February 2027 for deliveries.
The base Model Y L is available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with an estimated delivery window between December 2026 and January 2027.
For shoppers seeking shorter waits, both the Model Y Premium and Performance trims have estimated delivery windows between October and November 2026.
Model Y Performance Offers More Power With Less Range
The Model Y Performance may appeal to buyers looking for stronger acceleration. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.
That performance comes with a range trade-off. The Model Y Performance has an EPA-estimated range of 306 miles, about 21 miles fewer than the Model Y Premium AWD.
Higher Lease Prices Add to the Cost
CarsDirect also reported that the Model Y “isn’t a great buy” because lease prices “have gotten worse.” Lease prices for the Model Y Premium increased by 4.5% in May.
The Model Y is also no longer eligible for California’s MyFirstEV Rebate, which provides $3,500 to eligible first-time EV buyers in the state.
Tesla Model 3 Wait Times Are Also Increasing
The longer delivery windows are not limited to the Model Y. Tesla’s Model 3 sedan is also experiencing extended waits, with the base trim carrying a delivery window that stretches to March 2027.
Tesla’s upcoming Q3 production and delivery figures could provide more context around the longer waits, including whether production is keeping pace with deliveries.
Model Y Alternatives for U.S. Buyers
Shoppers considering the Tesla Model Y can also look at the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox EV and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Hyundai was the third-best-selling EV in Q2 2026, behind the Model Y and Model 3.
