Nissan’s global strategy is taking a new direction as the automaker looks to use its partnerships in China to develop global models, including the Nissan Terrano PHEV SUV, which has now been spotted undergoing testing in Australia.
Nissan Terrano PHEV Spotted Testing in Australia
Australian automotive publication Drive reported that a test mule of the Terrano PHEV was spotted near Arthur’s Seat on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. An eagle-eyed local car spotter captured clear photos of the heavily camouflaged SUV, which appeared to be conducting towing tests.
The photos also suggest that Nissan may have been conducting benchmarking tests. A GWM Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid was seen directly behind the Terrano during the testing session.
One of the clearest design clues identifying the vehicle as the Terrano Concept is its exposed rear-mounted spare wheel, which features a crossbar to hold it in place.
Terrano Could Replace the Pathfinder in Australia
It remains unclear whether the Nissan Terrano will be offered as a seven-seat SUV or retain a five-seat configuration. According to the report, however, the model is expected to replace the recently canceled Pathfinder in the Australian market.
The Terrano has also been spotted testing in China under camouflage. A few weeks ago, Instagrammer nissanarabian posted images showing the SUV undergoing testing there, including close-up views of the vehicle and an engine shot.
Nissan’s New Global Strategy
The Terrano is part of Nissan’s broader strategy of making products developed through its Chinese joint ventures available in other regions. The approach follows the Nissan Frontier Pro, also known as the Navara Pro, a plug-in pickup developed through a partnership between Nissan and Dongfeng.
The Frontier Pro is among the first models associated with Nissan’s new strategy and is planned for sale in key markets outside China, where it will compete with vehicles such as the BYD Shark. The Terrano is another model derived from the Frontier Pro platform.
Could the Nissan Terrano Reach the U.S.?
The Terrano’s potential availability in the U.S. remains uncertain. The article notes that a U.S. ban on Chinese-made cars would make the SUV’s arrival in the American market virtually impossible under current conditions.
At the same time, the Trump administration has been indicating that Chinese brands could potentially enter the U.S. if their manufacturers establish local production plants and hire local workers.
Nissan already has an extensive production footprint in the U.S., which could potentially be retooled for the Terrano if conditions change to allow Chinese models into the American market. For now, the situation remains unresolved, with strong pushback from U.S. manufacturers.
