AC Schnitzer, the longtime BMW tuning specialist, is set to continue operating after a Dutch-based company agreed to take over the business following its planned closure after 39 years.

AC Schnitzer Gets a New Lease on Life

AC Schnitzer has been modifying BMWs since 1987, building a reputation for performance upgrades, body kits and wheels for BMW models. Based in Aachen, Germany, the company was founded by Willi Kohl and Herbert Schnitzer as a separate division of Schnitzer Motorsport.

Although AC Schnitzer and Schnitzer Motorsport are separate entities, both have pursued similar goals of making cars look and perform faster. Their activities eventually expanded beyond BMWs to include motorcycles, Land Rover and Mini models.

Both organizations have faced difficulties in recent years. Schnitzer Motorsport is no longer operating, while AC Schnitzer was also placed under significant pressure as rising costs and changing market trends affected the business.

AM Group to Take Over AC Schnitzer

AC Schnitzer recently announced plans to close after 39 years in business. Its current owner, the KOHL Group, said it would focus on retail and services while dropping manufacturing, leaving the future of the tuning company uncertain.

At the time, AC Schnitzer was looking for a buyer. That search has now produced a result, with Dutch-based AM Group stepping in to acquire the tuning company. AC Schnitzer is expected to officially come under the new firm by November 2026.

What Is AM Group?

AM Group Holding BV has a portfolio focused on the automotive aftermarket. The company has brought together businesses specializing in vehicle personalization, carbon fiber engineering, performance products and advanced composites manufacturing.

Those areas closely align with AC Schnitzer’s business, creating potential connections between the tuning company and AM Group’s other divisions.

The companies AC Schnitzer will soon join include Urban, Heritage, Absolute Motors, UBC and GP Products.

How AM Group’s Companies Could Support Schnitzer

Urban specializes in SUVs, while Heritage focuses particularly on Land Rover Defenders. Urban has transformed the Defender with a carbon fiber body kit into a street truck, while Heritage builds soft-top versions of the SUV.

Absolute Motors also produces sports and performance cars and could provide support for Urban and Heritage.

UBC and GP Products could be particularly relevant to AC Schnitzer. UBC designs, builds and manufactures composite parts, an area directly connected to Schnitzer’s needs. GP Products is one of Europe’s biggest distributors and resellers of premium aftermarket products.

AC Schnitzer Still Faces Challenges

The change in ownership gives AC Schnitzer a path forward, but its future will depend on management on both sides. AM Group will need to develop the brand in ways that address the difficulties it previously faced, while Schnitzer will have to adapt more quickly to changing market conditions.

The company will also need to rebuild attention around its heritage, relevance and significance in the aftermarket industry.

AC Schnitzer’s future is therefore not without challenges, but the planned takeover gives the 39-year-old tuning brand another opportunity to continue operating rather than closing down.
