The BMW X8 rumor has gained new context after BMW acknowledged that it is seriously considering a new Sports Activity Vehicle that would sit above the X7 and be developed with American tastes in mind. The automaker has not confirmed a name, launch date, size, engine or price for the vehicle.

BMW Considers a Larger SUV for America

Talk of a BMW X8 has circulated for years, centered on the possibility of a larger, more luxurious SUV positioned above the BMW X7. BMW’s XM ultimately occupied some of that space, but the company is now considering another model above the X7.

The potential vehicle would be tailored to American drivers. BMW’s X lineup is already successful globally, while the X7 currently sits at the top of the brand’s SUV range.

Production capacity is also part of BMW’s thinking. The company’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, known as the “home of X,” is already operating at maximum capacity amid strong demand for SUVs.

Rather than continuing to expand SUV production at a single location, BMW wants to distribute production around the world. The strategy would allow the company to build more of its popular SAVs in different markets and respond more quickly to local buyer demand.

For now, BMW has not disclosed whether the vehicle will actually carry the X8 name. The company has also kept details about its launch date, dimensions, engine and pricing under wraps.

BMW Plans More Products and Fewer Variants

The potential flagship SAV is one of several products BMW has in development. The first-ever BMW Alpina model is scheduled to arrive next year, drawing inspiration from the 7 Series and positioned between BMW and Rolls-Royce.

BMW is also preparing a fully electric compact model for Europe in 2028. The vehicle will use Neue Klasse technology and is planned as a smaller, more affordable offering alongside Mini’s electric models.

At the same time, BMW is reducing the number of models it offers. The 2 Series Active Tourer will not receive a replacement as the automaker focuses on models it expects to remain important over the long term.

BMW Expands Advanced Driver Assistance

BMW is also expanding its advanced driver-assistance technology. A new Level 2++ system developed with Momenta is scheduled to launch in China with the local iX3.

Europe is set to receive another technology update in 2027, when navigation-guided assistance developed with Qualcomm will expand to highways, backroads and city streets under the new DCAS rules. The U.S. and other markets will receive the technology later.

BMW’s Highway Assistant is expected to reach 21 countries by the end of the year. For the iX3 and future models, the system will add Symbiotic Drive, allowing the vehicle to accelerate, steer and brake while the assistance system remains active without sudden cutoffs.

BMW X8 Remains Unconfirmed

BMW has acknowledged that it is considering a larger SAV above the X7, but the company has yet to confirm whether it will become a BMW X8. Details about the potential model remain undisclosed as BMW prepares a broader range of new vehicles and driver-assistance technologies.
