The Mazda MX-5 Miata delivered another strong sales performance in September, with U.S. sales rising 31.5% from a year earlier. The increase was enough for the iconic convertible to outsell the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ combined during the month.
MX-5 Miata Outsells GR86 and BRZ Combined
Mazda sold 689 MX-5 Miata models in September, up from the same month in 2025. The convertible accounted for 407 sales, while the retractable hardtop RF posted the stronger growth rate, with sales increasing 38.9%.
Toyota sold 460 GR86 models during the month, a 29.4% decline from a year earlier. Subaru’s BRZ gained 20.9%, reaching 214 sales.
Combined, the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ totaled 674 units in September. That left the MX-5 Miata 15 sales ahead of the two models combined.
MX-5 Sales Remain Ahead for the Year
Through the first nine months of the year, Mazda has sold 7,598 MX-5 Miata models, up 4.1% from the same period in 2025. Toyota’s GR86 has reached 5,642 sales, while the Subaru BRZ stands at 2,234.
Mazda’s year-to-date MX-5 total remains 278 units below the combined sales of the GR86 and BRZ. With three months still remaining, the MX-5 faces the traditionally weaker fall and winter period for convertible sales.
The MX-5 is also on pace to finish below its best sales year. Mazda’s strongest annual total came in 2006, when it sold 16,897 examples of the then-new third-generation model. The car’s best individual month was March 2007, when Mazda sold 2,281 units.
Mazda’s Stronger-Selling Models Drive Overall Sales
Despite the MX-5’s strong September, the sports car represents a small portion of Mazda’s overall sales. The automaker recorded its best September ever with 35,319 vehicles sold, an increase of 31.9% from the same month last year.
For the first nine months of 2026, Mazda has sold 310,368 vehicles, compared with 319,664 during the first nine months of 2025.
The Mazda3 hatchback alone outsold the MX-5 in September, with 910 units sold, nearly double the figure from a year earlier. Combined sales of the Mazda3 hatchback and sedan reached 3,704, up 147%.
Mazda’s SUV lineup also posted sales increases in September. The CX-5 led the brand’s SUV sales with 11,345 units, up 37.8% from a year earlier, while the CX-50 followed with 9,147 units.
MX-5 Remains Mazda’s Affordable Convertible
The MX-5 Miata remains Mazda’s entry-level convertible, with the base model starting at $32,025 including shipping. The next-cheapest models listed are the Mini Cooper at $35,950 and the Ford Mustang at $42,435.
While the MX-5’s September performance put it ahead of the GR86 and BRZ combined, Mazda’s larger-selling models continue to account for most of the company’s overall sales volume.
