The Jeep Wrangler has regained the U.S. sales lead over the Ford Bronco, reversing the position seen earlier this year as the Wrangler posted stronger third-quarter and year-to-date results through September 2026.

Jeep Wrangler Builds a Strong Lead

For the third quarter of 2026, covering July, August and September, Jeep sold 44,757 Wranglers, marking a 5 percent increase from the same period in 2025. Through the first nine months of the year, Wrangler sales reached 131,011 vehicles, up 2 percent from the same point last year.

Ford’s Bronco delivered a more mixed performance over the summer. After outselling the Wrangler in the second quarter of 2026, Bronco sales fell 5 percent in July and 9 percent in August compared with the corresponding months in 2025.

September brought a stronger result for Ford. The Bronco recorded its best third quarter ever, with 38,020 units sold. That was a 0.4 percent increase over the same quarter last year.

Even with that record quarterly result, the Bronco finished nearly 6,800 deliveries behind the Wrangler in the third quarter. Ford has sold 114,956 Broncos so far this year, compared with 131,011 Wranglers for Jeep.

Why the Jeep Wrangler Continues to Sell Strongly

The Wrangler’s long-established brand equity may be one factor behind its sales performance. For decades, the word “jeep” was practically generic for off-road SUVs.

The article notes that even Toyota’s J-oriented Land Cruiser terminology, including FJ40, FJ60 and UZJ100, traces back to the “Toyota Jeep BJ” off-roader the company built in the 1950s.

The Bronco has less heritage to draw on. Ford introduced the model in 1966 and discontinued it in 1996, before reviving the Bronco in 2021 after 25 years of relative obscurity.

Price also gives the Wrangler an advantage at the entry level. The Jeep starts at $38,030, compared with $43,290 for the Bronco.

Ford Bronco Still Has Key Advantages

The sales gap does not make the Bronco a bad choice. Its independent front suspension and wider passenger cabin provide a more comfortable highway experience, with stronger on-road manners while retaining much of its off-road capability.

Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged engines also offer more power than Jeep’s turbo-four and naturally aspirated V6 options. The Bronco lineup ranges from a 300-horsepower 2.3-liter four-cylinder to the 418-hp 3.0-liter V6 found in the Bronco Raptor.

To exceed Ford’s power output with a Wrangler, buyers have to move to the thirsty, V8-powered Wrangler Moab 392.

Wrangler Maintains Its Appeal

Despite the Bronco’s strengths, the convertible-roof, off-road SUV market is driven by emotion and desire as much as logic. The Wrangler continues to attract both outdoor enthusiasts and lifestyle buyers.

With 131,011 units sold through the first nine months of 2026 compared with 114,956 Broncos, the Wrangler has established a clear sales lead over Ford’s off-roader for the year so far.
