Aston Martin is delaying the launch of its first full-electric vehicle to at least 2033, as changing EV demand and legislation reshape the British automaker’s plans. The company had previously expected to introduce its first EV by 2030, after already moving the original 2027 target.

Aston Martin’s EV Launch Delayed

Autocar reports that it gained exclusive insight into Aston Martin’s EV plans. CEO Adrian Hallmark said the company’s first full-EV model will be pushed back to “at least” 2033.

Speaking to select media during the opening of the brand’s Q showroom in London, where the DBX GT was displayed, Hallmark said demand for EVs and legislation are “changing way faster than any car company can cope with.”

The changing environment has forced Aston Martin to reconsider its EV strategy and stress-test different scenarios across regions and markets. Hallmark described the situation as a “Spaghetti Junction” of options, leaving the automaker without a specific hard deadline for the vehicle’s launch.

Aston Martin Faces a 2035 Requirement

Hallmark said Aston Martin will need a full BEV by 2035 to remain within the legislation. While he hesitated to identify the exact year the company’s EV will arrive, he confirmed that it definitely will not launch in 2031.

That leaves Aston Martin with a three-year window before the carmaker breaches the legislation, according to Hallmark.

Aston Martin Is Delaying, Not Abandoning EVs

Hallmark emphasized that Aston Martin is not denying the importance of EVs. Instead, the company is delaying its electric program while taking additional time to assess the changing market and regulatory environment.

The automaker has also signed a partnership with Lucid to gain access to its EV technology. Aston Martin already has a long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz for its ICE engines, giving the company options as it develops its electric technology when the time comes.

Aston Martin Remains ICE-First

In the meantime, Aston Martin will remain an ICE-first brand, according to Hallmark. That means the automaker plans to continue with V8 and V12 engines while it delays the launch of its first full-EV model.
