The BMW X3 has overtaken the Lexus NX in U.S. sales during 2026, reversing last year’s position between the two compact luxury crossovers. BMW has sold more than 60,000 X3 units through September, while Lexus NX sales have declined compared with the same period in 2025.
BMW X3 Pulls Ahead of Lexus NX
The BMW X3 entered a new generation for the 2025 model year, and the redesign appears to have helped demand for the SUV. In 2026, X3 sales have increased while the Lexus NX, which was first introduced for the 2022 model year, has recorded a decline.
| Model | 2026 Year-to-Date | 2025 Year-to-Date | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X3 | 60,128 | 50,009 | +20.2% |
| Lexus NX | 50,148 | 57,256 | -12.4% |
BMW sold 60,128 X3 units between January and September 2026, a 20.2% increase from the same period a year earlier. The X3 now leads the NX by 9,980 units.
That marks a significant reversal from 2025, when the Lexus NX held a 7,247-unit advantage over the BMW X3 at the same point in the year.
Neither SUV is the top-selling vehicle for its respective brand. BMW’s best-selling model in 2026 is the X5, with 63,767 sales, while Lexus has sold 89,824 RX models.
The X3 costs more than the NX, but its newer design, performance and technology have likely helped it move ahead in sales this year. Lexus, however, has recently introduced a comprehensively refreshed 2027 NX, giving the model another opportunity to regain the lead.
How the Lexus NX and BMW X3 Compare
The Lexus NX and BMW X3 occupy slightly different positions within the luxury crossover market. While the X3 is firmly positioned in the compact crossover segment, the NX sits between the subcompact and compact categories.
The NX is smaller than the X3 but larger than the BMW X1, and that difference is noticeable inside the cabin. The X3 provides more interior room, although the NX remains well suited to parents with smaller, younger children.
Pricing and Powertrain Choices
The 2026 models also differ in starting price. The Lexus NX 350 AWD starts at $46,025, while the BMW X3 30 xDrive starts at $51,300.
Lexus offers a much broader NX lineup, with 15 variants compared with two for the X3. The NX also places a stronger emphasis on efficiency, offering hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, while all 2027 NX models are hybrids.
The BMW X3 lineup is topped by a 393-horsepower six-cylinder variant. The most efficient NX achieves 40 mpg combined, compared with 29 mpg for the four-cylinder X3.
Performance remains a key advantage for the BMW. Both X3 models can reach 60 mph in six seconds, while the NX 350 is not far behind but does not feel as sporty or responsive as the BMW.
Which Luxury Crossover Is Right for You?
The Lexus NX is likely to appeal to buyers who prioritize build quality, comfort and a quiet ride. It provides a more compliant driving experience and places a strong emphasis on pampering occupants.
The BMW X3 offers sharper handling and a more engaging driving experience, although its ride can be harsher. Its infotainment system is more advanced, but the lack of conventional controls may not appeal to every driver.
The latest X3 also falls short of the Lexus in perceived build quality, with finishes that are not as plush as those found in the NX.
Choose the Lexus NX for:
- Efficiency
- Value
- Ride comfort
- Reliability
- Bang for your buck
Choose the BMW X3 for:
- Performance
- Handling and driving enjoyment
- Infotainment tech
- Cargo and passenger space
- More modern design
The Lexus NX and BMW X3 remain capable luxury crossovers, but they target different priorities. For now, the NX’s age appears to be working against it, a factor that may help explain how the newer-generation X3 has moved ahead on the 2026 sales charts.
